bevSpotlight on JW House Volunteers:

The Monday Night Crew

Joan and Corinne getting ready to serve a meal donated by GuGu's Pizza and Pasta in Santa Clara.

Joan and Corinne are the Monday Night Volunteers at JW House. Here they share wth us their experience at JW House.

Joan: I was here from the very beginning when JW House opened. I was teaching English to adults once a week and wanted to do something with children. When I found out what JW House was, I really wanted to get involved.

Corinne: I retired a year and a half ago and was looking for something to do. My daughter read about JW House in the Santa Clara Weekly and told me about it. I contacted April, the House Manager, and the rest is history.

Joan: In the beginning we only had one restaurant donating meals. It is amazing to see the generosity of  restaurants and community groups that are donating full meals to the house. The most I have served at dinner was 35 people! The doorbell kept ringing and we kept making more food. Even some of the house guests stepped in to help cook!

Corinne: I feel like JW House is a worthwhile cause and it is wonderful knowing the guests are grateful. It encourages you to do your best and give your time.

Joan: the spirit of JW House is not a sad spiriti. It is a spirit of hope among the families staying here. They only wish there were more places like JW House.

Corinne: It is definitely a home away from home.

gbHow We Help Families

I am a medical social worker at Kaiser Permanente in Santa Clara, California and a proud supporter of the JW House.  I work inside the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit providing grief and crisis counseling to parents of premature and critically ill newborns. In my role, I assist parents during their birth crisis which I define as a "violation of everything you plan and expect when your child is born".  I assist parents by providing emotional support and concrete resources.

One my most powerful resources is the JW House!  Providing a family with comfortable and secure lodging steps away from their child's hospital bed is invaluable.  I have been referring families to the JW House since its opening and always hear from families, "Oh, thank you so much for referring us. It's just wonderful there."  Parents highlight that the best part of JW House is their welcoming staff who make it feel like "a home away from home".   Parents seem to appreciate the affordable, organized, convenient, welcoming, comfortable, and aesthetically beautiful environment.

As a hospital employee and community member who serves critically ill children, I am eternally grateful to have the JW House as part our community.  JW House makes my job easier, and without doubt diminishes some of the families' stress during one of the most heightened crisis and intimate moments of their lives.

Sincerely,

Gabriela Stern, LCSW
