Spotlight on a JW House Volunteer:
Peter Ross
Each month, we will feature a JW House volunteer in our newsletter. JW House volunteers are the heart and soul of our services to families who have loved ones receiving treatment at local hospitals.

submitted by Peter Ross
I recall first hearing about JW and his dream of a house when the San Jose Mercury News had a long article and photo upon his death in August, 2005. I remember thinking how truly extraordinary it was for a teenage boy with a terminal illness to be thinking not just of himself, nor of his family, but of some unknown strangers whom he would never meet.
In the spring of 2008 I visited the JW House site when it was under construction, with a class from Santa Clara University where I'd been teaching mathematics since 1982.The following March I stared volunteering there on Saturday afternoons, and I've enjoyed the friendliness and dedication of the other volunteers and staff ever since. I only wish that I knew how to cook, but there's hope, as April, JW House's House Manager, recently taught me how to make cornbread!
I got hooked on volunteering in the early 1960s when I taught math and some physics as a Peace Corps Volunteer in India, the most significant and rewarding two years of my life. I've done a modest amount of volunteering ever since, including 14 Sierra Club "service trips", each a week or longer, working on things like trail construction. After my retirement last fall I now also volunteer on Thursday afternoons as a dog socializer at the Humane Society of Silicon Valley.

JW House Gift Card Drive
Did you know JW House serves dinner 7 nights a week to Overnight and Day Use guests? In February, we served over 350 dinners. We are thankful for the support of local businesses such as Dream Dinners, Mio Vicino, Stuft Pizza, Tony and Alba's, Aqui Cal-Mex, China Delight, as well as the volunteer groups who come to cook meals.
Want to get involved? We are in need of gift cards to local grocery stores such as Safeway, Target, and Lucky so we can keep our kitchen stocked with fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, sandwich fixings and more for our guests. You can donate gift cards to:
JW House
3850 Homestead Road
