Ensnared Gorilla Dunia Freed in DR Congo

On December 13, the Chief Park Warden of Virunga National Park, Emmanuel de Merode, called Dr. Eddy to report that rangers had found a mountain gorilla caught in a poacher's trap in the Jomba region of the park. The gorilla, Dunia, a four- or five-year-old female belonging to the Mapuwa family, had a rope snare around her right wrist and the wrist appeared swollen and possibly lacerated. Ranger Desire Sekibibi was able to cut the long end of the rope from the vegetation where it was tied. Donate New or Used Cameras to Our Field Staff
Love seeing updates about gorilla health checks, interventions, and the orphans? Help the Gorilla Doctors to continue to provide you with the latest photos and videos of our work by donating a new or used camera to our veterinary field team! The Gorilla Doctors always bring cameras into the field to document their work, but many of our current cameras are in disrepair and have been through several years of use. Drs. Eddy, Fred, Jean-Felix, and Dawn all need better equipment. Please consider donating new or gently used DSLRs or high-quality "point-and-shoot" cameras such as those in the Canon G series or the Nikon P7000 series. The Gorilla Doctors need cameras that are capable of taking RAW files and HD video. Nikon VR lenses would also be appreciated. If you are willing and able to donate a camera or lens, please email thegorilladoctors@gmail.com and tell us about your equipment. Thanks so much for helping the Gorilla Doctors share our world with you!

Farewell Dr. Jan, You Will Be Missed
After serving as our regional veterinary manager in Africa for 2.5 years, Dr. Jan left MGVP in December to return to her family in Indiana and her position as associate veterinarian at the Indianapolis Zoo. During her time as a Gorilla Doctor, she distinguished herself through her professionalism, clinical skills, kindness, and ability to inspire those around her. She will be missed greatly. Dr. Jan shares her parting thoughts on the Gorilla Doctors' blog.
