Docs Save Baby Mountain Gorilla in Uganda
One Sunday afternoon in September, Dr. Fred received a call that a 2.5-year-old infant mountain gorilla was caught in a wire poacher's snare in Uganda's Mgahinga National Park. Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) trackers were able to cut the snare from the bamboo and the baby made it back to his mother Inshuti, a member of Nyakagezi group. However the snare was tight above the knee on his left leg. This was a seriously life threatening situation for this infant, and the Gorilla Doctors had little time to spare. Read More

Mountain Gorilla Orphan Update
Plans are still underway to move mountain gorilla orphans Maisha and Kaboko from our facility in Kinigi to the Senkwekwe Center at Rumangabo in DR Congo. Drs. Jan and Eddy and Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International Confiscated Gorilla Manager Sandy Jones, who works at G.R.A.C.E. with the Grauer's gorilla orphans, inspected the Senkwekwe Center a few weeks ago and recommended some small changes be made to ensure that the gorillas stay safe and sound inside their enclosure. However, all agreed that the new facility, with its lush enclosed forest area, would delight Maisha and Kaboko. The Gorilla Doctors will continue to monitor and treat Maisha, Kaboko, Ndeze, and Ndakasi for health issues. If you'd like to help us with this vital work you can become a Gorilla Orphan Guardian™ for as little as $30. |

MGVP's One Health Program Tackles Rabies

Since 2006, the Gorilla Doctors have worked with the Rwanda Animal Resource Development Authority to vaccinate the domestic dogs and cats living around Volcanoes National Park annually. Rabies, which can be transmitted from domestic pets to humans, other animals, and even gorillas, is one of the critical diseases being tackled by our One Health team.
Prior to our program, very few dogs and cats in this part of Rwanda were vaccinated. Most people living in this area could not afford the $5 to $10 vaccine, and ever fewer understood the connection between their animals' health and the health of their families, nor of the wildlife populations. Employee Profile: Schadrack Niyonzima
Schadrack Niyonzima works as the Administrative Assistant at our regional headquarters in Musanze, Rwanda, and has been a vital member of the team since joining us in September 2010. Thanks to Schadrack's management skills and political and business savvy, MGVP's local operations run smoothly. As the MGVP Administrative Assistant, Schadrack organizes our administrative documents, maintains good relations with local leaders and the government, manages our accounts, and carries out many human resource tasks.
"My favorite things about MGVP include working with a great staff and being part of an organization that works with gorillas. I saw gorillas with MGVP and it was a good experience. I also like that the fact that we have many dogs (five), especially the young ones Boots and Ama. Before I was afraid of dogs but now I like them." Read More

Join the 'One Walk for One Health' Fundraiser

Gorilla lovers in the Seattle area can help raise money for the Mountain Gorilla Veterinary Project by participating in or volunteering for the "One Walk for One Health" fundraiser in Seattle, WA. Organized by our dedicated fundraiser Drew Nichol, the event's goal is to raise $50,000 in order to support MGVP's One Health programs and to purchase a new vehicle for Drs. Eddy and Jacques to use in DR Congo. Our Congolese Gorilla Doctors must travel extensively--often through difficult areas on bad roads--in order to monitor the health of DRC's mountain and eastern lowland gorilla populations. Their current vehicle has survived many challenging days, and is now on its last legs.
The fundraising walk/run will take place at Seattle's Green Lake Park on Saturday, December 4, from 12-5 PM and follow a 2.8 mile trail that circles the lake. Walkers and runners are requested to raise pledges independently in order to participate in the event. Participants, volunteers, and donors may contact Drew Nichol at senkwekwe@gmail.com. More news and details will be posted on the Gorilla Doctors Facebook page.
