Hurricane Season Is Here!
Be Prepared!!!!

Hurricane PicWhat to do before, during and after a hurricane...............

Before the storm-Don't wait until the last minute to know what you're going to do.  If you're leaving town, know evacuation routes. If you're staying home, know the safest and strongest areas of your house.  Have a plan for contacting family members. Keep emergency supplies on hand-Bottled water, non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, medical supplies, portable radio, and first aid kit. Copies of important documents-Birth certificates, insurance policies, deeds, etc. should be copied.  Store the originals in a safe place such as a waterproof container or a bank safe deposit box.

During the storm-Remain calm. Stay inside and away from windows, skylights and glass doors. Find a safe area in your home (an interior room, closet or bathroom on the main level).  If flooding threatens your home, turn off electricity at the main breaker. Unplug TV's, and other major appliances.  If you lose power, turn off your air conditioner and water heater, etc. to reduce damages.  Do not go outside.  If the eye of the storm passes through your area, there will be a short period of calm, but the wind will rapidly speed up to hurricane force and will come from the opposite direction.  Resist the temptation to go outside during this time.

After the storm-Remain indoors until an official "all-clear" is given.  Listen to your portable radio. Do not touch fallen or low-hanging wires under any circumstances.  Stay away from puddles with wires in or near them.  Do not touch trees or other objects in contact with power lines.  Use phones only for emergencies.  Call 911 only for life-threatening circumstances.  Call utility companies immediately to report hazards such as downed power lines, broken gas or water mains, etc. Make any necessary property repairs to prevent further damage and contact your insurance company if you have any property damage.

National Flood Insurance Program

Since standard homeowners insurance doesn't cover flooding, it's important to have protection from the floods associated with hurricanes, tropical storms, heavy rains and other conditions that impact the U.S.

In 1968, Congress created the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) to help provide a means for property owners to financially protect themselves. The NFIP offers flood insurance to homeowners, renters, and business owners if their community participates in the NFIP. Participating communities agree to adopt and enforce ordinances that meet or exceed FEMA requirements to reduce the risk of flooding.

Premium Savings

Clients often ask, "Other than comparing insurance rates, what are other ways I can save money on my insurance premiums?"

There are many ways you can save on your insurance premiums.  For instance, because your premium is based partly on the level of risk the insurance company must take, there are things you can do to lower your premium.  Installing deadbolt locks, fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, monitored burglar/fire alarms can often save you up to 15 percent on your premium.  Check with your Prodigy Insurance Group agent before purchasing any of these items to see if your carrier has specific requirements to qualify for the discount.

Did You Know?

A homeowners policy does not provide coverage for flood damage, but it may provide coverage for many types of water damage to your home.

A few examples of water damage your Homeowners policy may include:
  • Water enters your home through a window after hail smashes your window.
  • Waters drips through your attic or ceiling after a heavy rain soaks through the roof.
  • A broken water pipe spews water in your home
