Greetings!
September is here and Fall is right around the corner, or is it? The heat doesn't seem to be going away any time soon, so please continue keeping your pets in cool shade and their water bowls replenished throughout the day. Pet events are typically more abundant in the upcoming months so keep an eye out for fun times ahead!  If you know of any events coming up, let us know we can add the info to our website!

Sincerely,

BREED OF THE MONTH

Quite a few of our clients have either recently adopted this breed or have a pet that is mixed with Anatolian Shepherd. These dogs are natural protectors, and very loyal. Anatolian's are good-natured around children, but can be stubborn and not good listeners. Anatolian's are a larger breed weighing between 90-150lbs. Coat colors vary from cream with a black mask, piebald to brindle colored. Their coats are typically short and double thick and shed quite a lot. Overall, these dogs make a good household pet with a little bit of work!

Children have headed back to school for the year, which leaves the family pet without a play mate! Make sure to help them acclimate to their new quieter days by taking them for walks during the day, and giving the kids some play time with them later in the day. This could be especially needed if families got puppies over the summer.

A Lucky Dog
Millie and her family had only minutes to escape the fire near their house in Bastrop this past weekend.

This past weekend's fires in Bastrop were devastating. So many stories of homeowners leaving with nothing but the clothes on their back. Today we got to meet Millie and her mom Debbie. Millie's owners had MINUTES to get a whole family and all the pets into cars to evacuate their area. Thankfully, their quick acting, helped them all escape harms way. This is just ONE story of the thousands who were affected in this area. Millie and her family are adjusting and taking in what happened to them, although, there is still a lot of unknown information about their home and Millie's doctor that she saw in Bastrop. Cornerstone was happy that we could help her out and get her medications that she was in need of.  Austin Pets Alive was doing a lot of work with Bastrop Animal Shelter, so if anyone wants to help the animals affected, please contact them to volunteer or make a donation!

FUN FACTS

Tests done by the University of Michigan proved that cats have better memories than dogs. The study shows that while a dog's memory lasts no more than 5 minutes, a cat's can last as long as 16 hours and that's more than even monkeys and orangutans!

* Ever wondered why dogs kick out their back legs after toileting?

Although thought by many to be a way of covering up their doings, it is actually a way of further marking their territory after they pee or poop. Dogs have scent glands in their paw pads and the act of kicking out their back legs helps to mark their territory. This action is predominantly a trait of intact males, but neutered males, and occasionally females, will be seen doing this too.

* When sniffed, catnip will stimulate a cat, however when eaten it will act as a sedative.
