Toques Off to
Holt Renfew

Chantal in Toque
Canadian retailer Holt Renfrew sold limited-edition Canada Goose toques over the holidays to benefit PBI. They raised $100,000 to help underwrite our efforts on behalf of polar bears--and raised awareness at the same time. We're so grateful!

One Ton Challenge . . . Make It a Resolution
Footprints from Afar 2
Reduce your carbon footprint to ensure that hers won't disappear.
You'll be surprised how easy it is.

PBI Advisory Council Scientist
Dr. Andrew Derocher is challenging you to make 2011 more meaningful: Help polar bears by reducing your personal carbon footprint by ONE TON.

That may sound like a lot, but a few hundred pounds here and a few hundred pounds there soon add up to make--well--a ton.| more

Nature Raises Hope for Polar Bears

Hope Video

Nature CoverA new study published in the prestigious journal Nature (15 Dec 2010) finds no evidence to suggest that an irreversible tipping point in the loss of arctic sea ice is a foregone conclusion.

INSTEAD, the news is that we can save polar bears and their habitat by significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions--if we act NOW. Learn more in this short video interview with the paper's lead author, PBI Senior Scientist Steven C. Amstrup.

Tree Keepers Want to Include You & Me

Trees for You & Me IconMembers of the American Association of Zoo Keepers (AAZK) are on a mission to combat climate change. They're so committed that they've launched a competition, called Trees for You & Me, to see which chapter can raise the most money to help PBI plant trees.

You can help your favorite zoo win this year's contest by making a contribution via a special donation page on our website. What do trees have to do with polar bears? They remove CO2 from the atmosphere, which helps improve sea-ice habitat.

Can This Be a Sign of Global Warming?
NYC Blizzard

New York City Blizzard of 2010

It seems weird, but weather extremes are all part of global warming.

In fact, that's why climate scientists prefer the term climate disruption or climate change to global warming. So far this winter, the Eastern U.S. and Europe has suffered through record snowfalls, yet the overall global temperature for 2010 ended as one of the three warmest years on record. Even as blizzards roared across New England, the Arctic experienced unseasonably warm weather.

Sweater Dazed
Ugly Sweaters

It's Friday ... and tacky sweaters are everywhere at Utah's Hogle Zoo. What's going on? It's all part of a CO2-reduction campaign inspired by Chris Schmitz, a PBI Leadership Camp graduate.

Every Friday from January through March, the zoo will turn appropriate thermostats down by three degrees and encourage staff, volunteers, and members to wear fun or tacky sweaters to symbolize their commitment to the environment. The person with a sweater that best represents the week's theme--from ugliest to most patriotic-will win a free lunch.

Hogle created Sweater Days after hearing about a similar one-day-a-year event at WWF-Canada. Hogle is now challenging other zoos, schools, and offices to follow their lead. PBI staff and volunteers are taking the challenge. How about you?

How Do Polar Bears Stay Warm?

Blubber Video

Polar bears don't need Sweater Days, but what keeps them warm: fur, blubber, or both? You may be surprised by the answer in this short video featuring Dr. Greg Thiemann of York University in Toronto.
