Finally, Some Ice on Hudson Bay

Yay!!! Reports from our friends in Churchill indicate that most of Churchill's polar bears have moved out onto some near-shore ice of western Hudson Bay to resume hunting seals, although much of the bay remains open water.
Dr. Steven C. Amstrup, PBI senior scientist, says that while the unusual sight of open water in Western Hudson Bay as late as December 8 can be very disheartening, we need to use this as yet another motivator and reminder that given the will, we can find the way to conserve polar bears and their Arctic habitat. | more |
All Snug in Their Dens
 | | The hopeful result of a winter in the den for a pregnant polar bear | Right now, polar bear mothers with newborn cubs are curled up in arctic snow dens, sleeping through the long winter nights. When they emerge in early spring and head for the sea ice, PBI scientists will be there to study their behavior. It's all part of better understanding this sensitive period in the polar bear's life cycle so that we can help others understand how to mitigate any disturbances. |
Can Polar Bears Live on Goose Eggs?
 | | Sometimes polar bears chew on kelp for nutrients. |
Do polar bears eat kelp? What can we do to help polar bears? Questions like these poured in from around the world as world-renowned scientists and educators answered them during our Tundra Connections broadcasts, conducted live from the tundra during Churchill's polar bear migration.
If you missed the live webcasts--or want to watch them again--no worries. We've archived them for you here.
