Future Prospects for Churchill's Polar Bears
New modeling shows that the
Western Hudson Bay population of polar bears could decline to just a handful of
bears by 2035.
But, Dr. Andrew Derocher, a PBI Advisory Council
scientist and one of the study's authors, says that the sobering
prediction offers a wake-up call--much like the classic Dickens book, A Christmas Carol--that shows what could happen in the future if we humans don't change our ways.

Hot! Hot! Hot!
Land! Sea! Air! Oh, my. New data from a combination of sources confirms that the planet is the hottest that it's been
since record-keeping began. At the same time, the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency has
strongly reaffirmed its position that the spike is human-caused. The
findings confirm the need for timely decisions and global action.

Summer Polar Bear Sightings
Land-locked polar bears have shown up in the Yukon this
summer--and polar bear attacks have taken place in Svalbard and Greenland. In two cases, the attacks resulted in injuries to the humans and death to the bears.
Human-polar bear encounters are expected to increase
as the sea ice melts. Our Sustainability Alliance is working internationally to reduce these conflicts,
so that people--and bears--escape harm.

Turn Your Laundry Green
A few simple changes in the way you do laundry can reduce CO2 and help polar
bears. + Make sure you have a full load before you start the washer. + Wash in cold water as often as possible. + Use a
clothesline or rack instead of an automatic dryer. + Reduce the amount of laundry that
you do by wearing clothes, like jeans, more than once. |
