Is it time for a Bike Fit?

We are now moving toward fall, and a lot of people will be putting their bicycles away for the wet and cold winter months... So why an article on bicycle fitting? Bike fit remains important as many riders will continue riding through the winter months on stationary trainers and exercise bikes, outdoors through the wet and cold with fenders and lights on their bikes or racing cyclocross in the mud.

The basic goals of a bike fit are to improve comfort, decrease risk of injury, and improve performance and power output.  When being fit it is important to keep in mind your own goals. Comfort is what is important to most recreational and touring cyclists while power output becomes more importa nt to racing cyclists.

Bike Fit With Joe

The basic rule of thumb for those spending time on exercise bikes in the gym or at home for seat height: place your heel on the pedal while the pedal is at the low point in the stroke (6:00 position), and adjust the seat height so that your knee is extended, that way when you have the ball of your foot on the pedal, you will have a slight bend in the knee. If you are lucky enough to be on an exercise or spin bike with a lot of adjustments, feel free to call me to discuss saddle fore and aft position and handlebar position.

Use the same rule for seat height to adjust your regular bicycle. The age-old rule for overall frame to handlebar stem length is that the bars should obscure the front hub (axle) when you are seated on your bike. Handlebar height, in general, should place the trunk at approximately 25-45 degrees depending on body type, bicycle type, and history of spine and hip ailments.

Feel free to contact Joe Fricke at: 503.257.9881 if you would like a more complete fit and performance assessment.
