Exercise of the Month
This month's focus centers around circuit training, specifically a cardiovascular circuit.  It's no secret that adding circuit training to your exercise routine once every week helps combat the 'plateau effect' as well as alleviating boredom. Instead of jumping onto a treadmill or elliptical machine for 20-30 minutes, try splitting your time into two smaller blocks using different machines or forms of cardio vascular activities. Alternate between a stationary bike and the stairmaster, or bike and a treadmill. The key is mixing two different pieces of cardio exercise equipment and varying the resistance levels or speed. Even equipment not traditionally considered cardio equipment will work, a versa-climber or rowing machine will also provide a quality workout.

Workout Example
Equipment: Stairmaster / Stationary Bike
Total workout: 30 minutes Stationary Bike
Resistance: changes throughout workout

Bike                  5 min level  5  RPM 75-90

Stairmaster        5 min level  5

Bike                  4 min level  6  RPM 80-90

Stairmaster        4 min level  6
Bike                  3 min level  7  RPM 80-90

Stairmaster        3 min level  7

Bike                  2 min level  8  RPM 70-80

Stairmaster        2 min level  8

Bike                  1 min level  6  RPM 70-80

Stairmaster        1 min level  6

The basic principles of the circuit can be applied to any two different cardiovascular activities, spending x minutes on one activity then switching activities for the same amount of time. The example above is a general outline, the exercise time, resistance levels and RPM goals are adaptable to your personal capabilities.

Wishing you a fantastic Fall,
