2ND NETWORK LAUNCHES
|
| |
24 Member Organizations Now Involved
And we have liftoff of our 2nd Healthcare Value Leaders Network! Our first Network is continuing into its second year and we have, with our second Network, a new group of 10 healthcare delivery organizations that have committed to sharing and spreading lean thinking and management methods.
Why multiple Networks? With this structure, each group can build relationships in a smaller setting, including our " gemba visits" that occur three times a year for each Network. There are some shared committees and resources, such as our private member website, but the broader organization operates as a "network of networks."

1ST ANNUAL LEAN HEALTHCARE TRANSFORMATION SUMMIT A SUCCESS
|
|

The first annual Healthcare Transformation Summit is now in the rear-view mirror. Executives and managers from Network organizations, those in the forefront of the lean healthcare movement, shared best practices and practical advice with nearly 260 attendees. Prior to the two-day Summit, a variety of workshops were held. In the "Long Term Lean Planning" workshop, conducted by Joan Wellman, Joe Murli noted, "I was blown away by what I saw today." Joe was an instructor for another workshop titled, "Supporting Healthcare Leader Standard Work with Visual Management Tools."
Summit keynote speakers included Dean Gruner, MD, president and CEO of ThedaCare, and Michael Erikson, MSW, vice president, Primary Care Services at Group Health Cooperative. Attendees were impressed by Gruner's frank discussion regarding ThedaCare's successes and failures in their lean journey.
From the "Managing With A3
Thinking" breakout session, one participant commented, "Dr. Jack Billi
is the best teacher. I learned so much from him and value his
participation and generosity in developing us." Likewise, the Group
Health Cooperative presentation provided valuable information and their
large visual boards were the single-most photographed item at the
Summit. Another attendee said they "loved the hands-on experience.
Wonderful, practical, and helpful!"
A large portion of the attendees participated
in the Summit reception and enjoyed the networking opportunity, as was
evidenced by the roar of the crowd as they discussed the latest in healthcare
improvement methods.

AVAILABLE NOW! ON THE MEND
|
|
Hardcover or Kindle Format
In On the Mend: Revolutionizing Healthcare to Save Lives and Transform the Industry John Toussaint, M.D., former CEO of
ThedaCare, and Roger A. Gerard, Ph.D., its chief learning officer, demonstrate
how to fix the problems of healthcare's cost and quality permanently by applying lean principles. The book was released at the Healthcare Transformation Summit by the Lean Enterprise Institute and was presented as a gift to all attendees prior to being available for purchase. Many Summit attendees also took advantage of the private book signing, where Roger and John added personal notes to individual copies. "I was most impressed with the ThedaCare team's demonstration of two key principles of lean - Respect for People and Humility! This book should open the eyes of healthcare leaders and politicians alike in seeing the possibilities of lean (Continuous Improvement) in lowering costs in healthcare, while improving quality of care, patient satisfaction and employee engagement."

| Third Network Discussions Taking Place Now
With all of the talk of healthcare reform, politicians alone
cannot create a clear path to quality improvement and cost reduction.
"Real healthcare reform" comes at the front lines of healthcare, as
medical professionals and administrators work together to redesign care
using lean thinking. As these efforts take place around the world, the
spirit of collaboration and shared purpose in healthcare often pulls
people together to help each other in this important work.
Are you a healthcare delivery organization that has demonstrated results from lean? Do you have executive-level support and leadership for your efforts? Are you willing to share your lessons learned, collaborating with others to define, measure, and share lean healthcare success?
We are now beginning to talk with leaders from organizations who are interested in participating in a future Network. If you would like to learn more, please email Mark Graban ( mgraban@lean.org) or Helen Zak ( hzak@lean.org) or call 617-891-2900. There will be a planning meeting held in September for prospective members to meet each other and to learn more from members of the first two Networks.
