Greetings!

Thanks for your continued interest in the Healthcare Value Leaders. It is our ongoing aim to help spread lean practices and management methods for the benefit of patients, healthcare professionals, and their organizations - we hope this newsletter furthers this aim.

NEW BOOK COMING SOON: ON THE MEND
On the MendInsights from ThedaCare's Journey

In On the Mend: Revolutionizing Healthcare to Save Lives and Transform the Industry John Toussaint, M.D., former CEO of ThedaCare, and Roger A. Gerard, Ph.D., its chief learning officer, demonstrate how to fix the problems of healthcare's cost and quality permanently by applying lean principles:
  • Using value-stream mapping to cut the average "door-to-balloon" time for heart attack patients at two hospitals from 90 minutes to 37.
  • How "building in quality" broke down divisions among medical specialties so teams developed patient care plans faster.
  • How "one piece flow" saved time in treating ischemic stroke patients, increasing the number of patients receiving a CT scan within 25 minutes from 51% to 89%.
  • And, perhaps most importantly - how other healthcare leaders can begin transformations using a nine-step action plan based on what ThedaCare did - and what it would do differently.

The book is set to be released in June in conjunction with our Lean Healthcare Transformation Summit.

INTERESTED IN JOINING THE NETWORK?
Third Network Forming in Late 2010

With all of the talk of healthcare reform, politicians alone cannot create a clear path to quality improvement and cost reduction. "Real healthcare reform" comes at the front lines of healthcare, as medical professionals and administrators work together to redesign care using lean thinking. As these efforts take place around the world, the spirit of collaboration and shared purpose in healthcare often pulls people together to help each other in this important work.

The first Healthcare Value Leaders Network, established in June 2009, consists of 14 organizations.  In April 2010, a second network of 12 organizations was formed.  We anticipate forming a third network before the end of 2010.  The goal of each network is to accelerate the learning and lean journey of each organization - through in-depth gemba visits, educational opportunities, peer-to-peer networking, a private collaboration website, and other vehicles for learning.
