Kelder's Farm
What's Up?
Asparagus!
Just this week, due to the hot spell, the asparagus is up early. The first asparagus is the sweetest, because it's getting a blast of stored sugars from the roots. Asparagus is great grilled, if you haven't tried it. There's a recipe at the Homegrown Mini-Golf web site.
Eggs!
That killdeer that I mentioned in the last email has made her nest right in the rose bed! This is the third year that killdeer have nested on the links, so we are getting to be experienced midwives (or at least orderlies). She lays her eggs right on the ground and they're very camouflaged:

The birds arrange the eggs with the pointed ends in the center.

Killdeer protect their very vulnerable eggs by distracting anybody interested in them with an amazing, noisy display. Talk about drama queens--this bird would give Bette Davis a run for her money! I made a little video tape if you're interested. You can see it on our Homegrown Minigolf Facebook page.
The mom's camouflaged, too, except for her bright orange eye.
Here's the mother.

The Black Hole
That's what I call our 10th hole, the last one, the trick one that gives you a free game if you get the ball in the right spot. Actually it's called "Crop Circle" but for various reasons, it's been very hard to get it working just right. I'm embarrassed to admit that I've had to rebuild it every year to solve problems posed by its Rube-Goldbergian trickiness. Here's what's in store for this year:
If you get your ball in the center hole you get it back and get a free game, otherwise, it goes careening down the channel into the goose pen.
Crop Circle
Sometimes building a miniature golf course really is almost rocket science! I always think of this cartoon by my good friend Ken Brown:

New Entrance
And we're making a new entrance to the minigolf, one that I hope is, well, entrancing. Ian Hayes and Gary Porter, from Country Wisdom, have made a great big cedar log frame, from local cedar, natch!

I'm painting the sign that will be hung in the top area. It's going to be very nice, I think.
Opening on Saturday, April 24!!
Kelder's is having their annual Community Yard Sale in the parking lot (it's not too late to sign up, if you want to sell things), and Homegrown Mini-Golf will be open. The quince will be blooming, peppermint and spearmint and other herbs are up, and you'll be able to see the Ms. Killdeer "in person," though she might be too busy doing her act to sign autographs.
Happy putting!
