 Join us for Fall Walking Weekend October 5-8th   

The Department of Human Services, through our Mass In Motion Initiative, is pleased to be a partner of the Cape Cod Commission for this year's fall Walking Weekend October 5-8th. Join us in exploring Cape Cod's natural surroundings through free walks and hikes. There are walks for all ages and fitness levels and several of this year's walks have special themes.

C&I UNITED WAY COMMUNITY IMPACT GRANTS

2013 C&I United Way Community Impact Grants is a grant-funding model that strategically invests in human service programs that demonstrate collaboration, sustainability, efficient and effective use of resources and measurable results.  Any 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, municipality or school providing services to communities on Cape Cod and the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard are eligible to apply.  Awards vary but are in the range of $10,000-$50,000.

MLK DAY OF SERVICE PROJECTS - January 21, 2013

Barnstable County's AmeriCorps Cape Cod is seeking applications for potential projects for a Martin Luther King Day of Service volunteer event to take place on Monday, January 21, 2013.  Let us offer your organization the energy and resources leveraged by a corps of 32 AmeriCorps Cape Cod members, AmeriCorps program staff, community volunteers, donations from local businesses, and grant funding. Fill out the attached Request for Information form, and your organization's project could be selected.  Deadline for submitting proposals is October 19, 2012.

CAPE COD HOARDING TASK FORCE

The Cape Cod Hoarding Task Force (CCHTF) mission is to sensitively raise awareness of compulsive hoarding and to provide education and support for those affected by hoarding through accessible tools, referrals and resources.  The CCHTF seeks to develop a coordinated response and to forge a cooperative arrangement among County, Town, Community Organizations and private Services.  View the Cape Cod Compulsive Cluttering Resource Guide.  CCHTF meets the second Thursday of every month at the Dennis Police Dept., 90 Bob Crowell Rd., South Dennis.  The next meeting is scheduled for October 11 from 9:30 - 11:30 AM

 

The CCHTF will be holding a training on November 16, 2012 at the Harwich Community Center.  The training covers legal issues of Hoarding, effective code enforcement and other issues.  Cost is $40 for pre-registration or $50 the day of the event.  This includes breakfast & lunch and CEU's are available for registered sanitarians and certified Health Officers.  Please register by November 1st.

EFFECTIVE VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT TRAINING

Join Cape Cod Volunteers for this two-part series.   Training will take an organization from assessing its volunteer needs to identifying and developing essential componenets of building or strengthening its volunteer program, to putting a plan in place for recruiting and retaining volunteers.  The training also includes 4 hours of follow up consulting time with one of the trainers.

 

Training info:  Tuesdays, October 16 & 23 from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM.  Check in begins at 8:45 AM at the Harwich Community Center, 100 Oak St., Harwich.  Cost is $100 per organization for up to 3 representatives.  Lunch and materials included.  Click here  to register or e-mail  or call 508/362-0242.

Falmouth Fund Technical Assistance Workshop

The Cape Cod Foundation and The Falmouth Fund will sponsor a workshop on applying for grants to The Falmouth Fund. Serving on a Board: Rewards and Satisfaction - Tips for a Win-Win Experience

The Community Leadership Forum Partnership will sponsor a workshop on serving on the board of a nonprofit organization, 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24. The workshop will be a practical discussion on how to find the right board opportunity and best practices of taking on a board role. The event will end with a networking reception with nonprofit representatives, scheduled for 6-7 p.m.  Pre-registration is required. For further details and to register, click here.

WEBINAR: HEALTHY COMMUNITIES BY DESIGN

Communities are buzzing about the concept of "healthy communities by design", the idea of combating obesity by making the healthy choice the easy choice. This webinar on October 22, 2012, 2 - 3:00 PM ET will introduce strategies to increase physical activity through better community design. The webinar will feature Mark Fenton - a public health, planning, and transportation consultant who is trying to help America find its way to more active and more livable cities, towns, and neighborhoods. Mark works with organizations and communities around the country to build environments, policies, and programs that help to create places where more people walk, bicycle, and take transit more of the time.

 

This webinar is for anyone concerned with improving health in their community -- hospital leaders, city planners, and community coalition members. Health Resources in Action is a national public health organization dedicated to helping people live healthier lives and build healthy communities through policy, research, prevention, and health promotion.

SAVE THE DATE: CRACKING THE CODES

Save the date for this special screening of Dr. Shakti Butler's new documentary: Cracking the Codes - The System of Racial Inequity to be held on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 from 6:30 - 9:00 PM at the Strand Theatre, 543 Columbia Rd., Dorchester, MA. MASSDOT - YOUR VISION, OUR FUTURE

The Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) is holding a series of statewide discussions to engage the public in a conversation about the transportation system they want and what we need to do to achieve that vision.  The purpose of these meetings is to hear from customers and residents in order to generate ideas and help prioritize agency initiatives now and in the future.  For more information, visit the Mass DOT website.

SAMARITANS 35TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

In honor of their 35th anniversary, The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands are proud to invite the community to attend a special event on Saturday, October 27th at 1:00 pm at the Tilden Arts Center of Cape Cod Community College in West Barnstable.  Kevin Hines, renowned suicide prevention and mental health advocate, has spoken to over a quarter of a million people about his firsthand experience with suicide. Kevin is one of 29 people to have survived jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge and now devotes his time to talking with communities around the world about living mentally well and the prevention of suicide. The suggested donation for admission is $10 for the general public and $5 for students. However, no one will be turned away due to inability to pay. FREE FLU EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS

$1.8 MILLION IN AFFORDABLE CARE ACT FUNDING COMES TO MASSACHUSETTS

Massachusetts Receives nearly $1.8 Million in Affordable Care Act Funding to Increase Cervical Cancer Screenings and Wellness at 32 Community Health Centers and improve the ability of community health centers to become Patient Centered Medical Homes.  Patient-centered medical homes are a care delivery model designed to improve quality of care through better coordination, treating the many needs of the patient at once, increasing access, and empowering the patient to be a partner in their own care.  The Affordable Care Act funding will assist 810 health centers nationwide as they work towards these goals.  Centers in Southeastern Massachusetts receiving funding include:

MASSACHUSETTS COMMISSION ON LGBT YOUTH

The Massachusetts Commission on LGBT Youth is currently accepting applications for new commissioners! This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in LGBT youth issues.

 

The Commission is established by law as an independent agency of the Commonwealth to recommend and advocate to all branches of state government effective policies, programs, and resources for LGBT youth to thrive. The time commitment for commissioners involves attending 4-6 full Commission meetings per year plus monthly subcommittee meetings - so 1-2 meetings (generally in the evenings) per month, plus any additional project work a member might take on.

HOSPICE & PALLIATIVE CARE OF CAPE COD REBRANDS AS HOPEHEALTH

Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod, the organization that has provided hope to thousands of patients and families for more than three decades unveiled its new name HopeHealth on September 17, 2012.  The HopeHealth name reinforces the non-profit's mission of enhancing the quality of life for people experiencing serious illness and loss, while also reflecting an expansion of services and footprint across six Eastern Massachusetts counties.

 

Alzheimer's Services of Cape Cod & the Islands (ASCCI) became an affiliate of Hospice & Palliative Care of Cape Cod more than a year ago. ASCCI also announced its new name Hope Dementia & Alzheimer's Services and will continue to fulfill their mission of meeting the growing healthcare needs of Cape Cod and the surrounding communities.  Read more ...

MASS 2-1-1 is a free, confidential, 24/7 information and referral database and hotline for access to health and human services for consumers and providers.  Multi-lingual translations are also available.  The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has designated it as the official point of contact for receiving emergency information during a time of crisis.

VETERANS CRISIS HOTLINE

The Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) is available 24/7/365 to provide confidential counseling and referrals for Veterans and their families.  This is an integrated national outreach effort to increase awareness and use of the Veterans Crisis Line, support and promote broader VA suicide prevention efforts, and promote help-seeking behaviors among Veterans at risk of suicide and other mental health problems.  For more information about the Veterans Crisis Line please click here.

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS
Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually.  Seven to ten people -- parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, grandchildren and close friends -- deeply feel the devastation of each loss.  
That means that approximately 5 million "survivors" are left behind every year.
Samaritans has expanded the number of sites on the Cape & Islands for their survivor support groups including Falmouth, Hyannis and Nantucket.  These groups honor and respect the needs of the survivors, provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.

HOMELESSNESS CRISIS HOTLINE
Serving individuals & families in the communities of Barnstable County, Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.  Immediate local emergency housing, food and transportation available.  Referral to the right resources for assistance, assessment and on-going support. If you or someone you know, are in crisis and have no place to stay tonight, call the  Crisis Hotline at 1-888-656-2233 to connect with an experienced advocate who can arrange local overnight emergency housing until the next business day.  You will meet with an advocate the following day to help you access available resources and supportive services.
