711 Relay Service for People Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Just as you can dial 211 or 411 for information, you can dial 711 to access all telecommunications relay services (TRS) anywhere in the United States. The relay service is free.  If you are deaf, hard of hearing, or have a speech disability, just dial 711 to access your state TRS, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. TRS is a service that enables telephone communications for people who do not have TTYs.  By dialing 711, you'll automatically be connected to a TRS Communications Assistant who will relay your conversation with strict confidentiality. A telecommunications relay service (TRS) allows people who are deaf, hard of hearing, or speech impaired to communicate through a communications assistant (CA) with people who use a standard telephone. A CA relays the TTY (text telephone or telecommunications device for deaf and hard of hearing people) input to the telephone user and types that person's response back to the TTY user.

SUICIDE AND EATING DISORDER WEBINAR

Research has demonstrated high suicide rates in eating disorders.  In fact, some studies indicate that the high mortality rate in anorexia is more a function of suicidality than of compromised medical status.  Individuals with eating disorders may be at particular risk for suicide based on their unique experience of the combination of perceived burdensomeness, isolation, and capacity to engage in a lethal act.  Despite the high prevalence of suicide in eating disorders, suicidality is under-researched in this population and consequently, not well understood.

You are invited to participate in a FREE webinar sponsored by the Massachusetts department of Public Health's Suicide Prevention Program titled: Matters of Life and Death: Suicide and Eating Disorders on Thursday, September 13, 2012, 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM (EST).  To register send an email to Brandy Brooks at the DPH Suicide Prevention Program at [email protected]Registration deadline is September 7, 2012.  Space is limited.

MDPH CARE COORDINATION PROGRAM

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) Care Coordination Program (CCP) would like to announce the availability of funding to increase breast, cervical and colorectal cancer screening rates through the provision of patient navigation services in community-based organizations (CBOs).  Through this funding, the CCP seeks to support community health workers in CBOs to provide patient navigation and community linkages to services with the overall goal of providing evidence that local community collaborations can improve health outcomes.

Funding will be awarded to three CBOs to improve screening rates in their local areas.  The selected CBOs are expected to (1) outreach to underserved and hard to reach men and women to educate them about breast, cervical and colorectal health and the need for screening, (2) increase screening behaviors within the population through education, referrals and navigation support, (3) collaborate with the local CCP care coordination site to assure linkages to medical services as needed by the clients, and (4) continue to build local collaborations, particularly with Mass in Motion (MiM) Communities. Preference will be given to CBOs that demonstrate collaboration with local CCP care coordination sites and Mass in Motion (MiM) Communities.

MiM and CCP contractors are invited to provide feedback and to disseminate this survey to partner organizations, clients, providers and community members. Communities and stakeholders interested in providing input for this project must respond by August 24, 2012, to the online questionnaire: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3RSZK2Z.  This Request for Input can also be found on the Comm-Pass website by searching for Solicitation # 304418.

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS

That means that approximately 5 million "survivors" are left behind every year.
Samaritans has expanded the number of sites on the Cape & Islands for their survivor support groups including Falmouth, Hyannis and Nantucket.  These groups honor and respect the needs of the survivors, provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.
