DEPARTMENT'S CORNER

We would like to welcome our three summer interns, Caroline Conena, Rasneet Sandhu, and Liam Jette who Christine Stein (Senior Project Manager) is supervising. Caroline is a rising senior at UMass Amherst in the Commonwealth Honors College studying public health and management. Caroline worked with us last summer and we are very happy she has returned this year. She is primarily assisting us with work to meet the Healthy Eating Objectives of the Department's Mass In Motion Municipal Leadership and Wellness Grant. Rasneet joined the Department in May, and is a second year graduate student at Boston University School of Public Health, with a concentration in epidemiology and biostatistics and a special interest in behavioral health. Before beginning her Master's degree, Rasneet worked in several settings providing support to low income families and children, including in her home state of Arizona and South Africa. Rasneet is assisting us with analysis of behavioral health secondary data sets (mental health, substance abuse, self-injurious behavior, and suicide death) and with other work the Department is conducting in the area of behavioral health. Liam is a rising second year medical student at UMass Medical School in Worcester with an interest in being a rural health physician. The medical school is sponsoring his June and July placement with the Department, which Christine is able to supervise in her role as an Assistant Professor in Family Medicine and Community Health at UMass Medical School. Besides participating in opportunities to learn more about social determinants of health, Liam has been assisting us with work to meet the Active Living objectives of the Department's Mass In Motion Municipal Leadership and Wellness Grant.

Again, welcome to Caroline, Rasneet and Liam!   (The Barnstable County Mass In Motion objectives are posted on the Department's website.)

HYANNIS CAR WASH PROMOTION

Beginning July 2, Balise Motors and Hyannis Car Wash will team up with local radio stations to give away FREE Oil, Lube & Filter changes at Balise Ford, Hyundai and Nissan in Hyannis and FREE car washes at Hyannis Car Wash.  Each station has its own internal mechanism to giveaway the oil changes and car washes on the air.  Most stations will be using on-air contests for this.

In addition, for every car wash done in the month of July 2012, Hyannis Car Wash will donate $3 to Cape Cod YMCA, Boys & Girls Club of Cape Cod or Children's Cove.  This $3 will be donated whether the car wash was purchased or given away.  All three charities have been guaranteed a minimum of a $2,500 donation.  Of course, we hope to exceed that number!

AFFORDABLE CARE ACT DECISION

The June 28th Supreme Court decision supports the health and well-being of all Americans.  The Supreme Court has upheld the Affordable Care Act virtually in its entirety, affirming government's vital role in protecting and advancing the health and well-being of all Americans.  Not only does this decision advance quality, affordable clinical care for all, but it also allows the innovations of community prevention initiatives across the country to support health and well-being.

By including prevention measures such as the Prevention and Public Health Fund and the National Prevention Strategy, the Affordable Care Act moved our country from a focus on sick care towards a system that advances health and health equity, saving money and lives.  These measures have supported communities across the country in creating safe, walkable streets, promoting healthy food environments, supporting local worksite wellness, and safeguarding tobacco-free air.  Click here for full report from the Prevention Institute.

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS
Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually.  Seven to ten people -- parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, grandchildren and close friends -- deeply feel the devastation of each loss.
That means that approximately 5 million "survivors" are left behind every year.
Samaritans has expanded the number of sites on the Cape & Islands for their survivor support groups including Falmouth, Hyannis and Nantucket.  These groups honor and respect the needs of the survivors, provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.
