Join other walkers in Cape Walk 2012!
The Department's Mass In Motion program, funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, is delighted to be a co-sponsor of Cape Walk 2012. This walk is a biennial event of Cape Cod Pathways, an initiative of the Barnstable County's Commissioners and the Cape Cod Commission to create a Capewide network of walking trails. Cape Walk 2012 takes place June 2nd-10th and is a nine-day opportunity topromote a 100-mile end-to-end walking trail along Cape Cod, beginning in Provincetown and ending in Bourne. The walk each day is 7-15 mileswith an experienced volunteer Walk Leader. The day usually begins at 8.30 a.m. (see the brochure for each day's schedule), with a designated lunch stop and a shuttle that is always available in case a walker needs a little extra boost. FOOD THAT'S IN WHEN SCHOOL IS OUT | | Free Home Delivered Meals for Your Children this Summer
Many families rely on school breakfast and lunch to help ease tight budgets. But when summer arrives, and school meals are no longer an option, it becomes harder to make ends meet. This program helps families stretch their resources and ensures that children receive nutritious meals throughout the summer and return each school year ready to learn.
The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) typically operates at summer open site programs and provides free meals to any child 18 and under who comes to the site. But in rural areas without public transportation, children have difficulty accessing these sites. This summer, Massachusetts Dept. of Elementary & Secondary Education, USDA, the Child Nutrition Outreach Program at Project Bread, and the YMCA Cape Cod are partnering to create a new way for families in the Hyannis, Mashpee and Bourne area to participate in SFSP. The program is similar to the Meals on Wheels program for seniors. We will provide breakfasts and prepared lunches to qualified children at their homes throughout the summer. Meals will be delivered Monday-Friday to families' homes.
Interested? Please call the YMCA Cape Cod at (508) 362-6500 ext. 211 for more information and to see if you qualify.

ELDER ORAL HEALTH SUMMIT | |
Elder Oral Health Summit will be held Tuesday June 5, 2012, 9:30am-2:30pm, Hyannis Golf Club, sponsored by the Oral Health Excellence Collaborative (OHEC)
Dental disease is the most common chronic disease among seniors. It impacts their ability to eat, talk, sleep and socialize. Routine oral hygiene to prevent disease and access to care when decay is found is imperative. OHEC has secured an excellent training video from the American Dental Association that gives an introduction on the importance of oral health and provides instruction in good oral hygiene--one section for seniors and one for caregivers who help to carry out toothbrushing and/or denture care. This video will allow you to provide this information to groups or one-on-one for seniors anywhere there is a computer or dvd player. Everyone who attends the June 5 Summit will receive a copy of the DVD.
Nurses attending the Summit will receive 4.8 Continuing Education Units. Participants will benefit in learning about the vital importance of oral health for seniors, the status of elder oral health in our community and oral health programs and services for seniors.
If you are a senior, live with a senior, take care of a senior, work with seniors or will be a senior, make sure you attend the Summit. Register today at www.ohec.eventbrite.com
