DEPARTMENT'S CORNER

DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN SERVICES TO ISSUE MASS IN MOTION COMMUNITY-BASED RFR

Early next week, Barnstable County's Department of Human Services (BCSHS) and Resource Development Office (RDO) will release a Request for Responses (RFR) to the more than 30 member food pantries and meal programs of the Cape Cod Hunger Network. The purpose of the RFR is to engage community-based organizations in helping BCDHS achieve one of five of its Mass In Motion Wellness and Municipal Leadership Grant Objectives: To implement strategies to increase availability of healthier food options at the Cape Cod Hunger Network's approximately 30 member food pantries and meal programs located throughout Barnstable County. There will be two awards of approximately $9,000 each for the period July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013. Although the applicant must be a Cape Cod Hunger Network food pantry or meal program, we encourage collaboration with other organizations, agencies and businesses in the applicant's service area. Eligible applicants will be directly notified of this opportunity by email and postal mail and the RFR materials will be posted on the BCDHS and RDO websites. We also anticipate a link to the materials on the Cape Cod Hunger Network website. Contact information for questions about the RFR will be provided in the release.

The Department will also be adding a Mass In Motion domain on its website in early May to provide detailed information about the Barnstable County Mass In Motion Wellness and Municipal Leadership Grant, as well as links to an array of associated materials to promote Healthy Eating and Active Living across age-groups. Please contact Christine Stein with general questions about the County's Mass In Motion initiative: cstein@barnstablecounty.org  and phone (508) 375 - 6629.

2012 SNAP REIMBURSEMENT PROJECT SESSIONS

If you know providers in your networks who are doing short term job readiness and/or workforce training for individuals who may be on cash assistance and food stamps, they may benefit from learning more about the SNAP-ET programs.  The employment training (ET) benefit allows programs to recoup a dollar-for-dollar match for every private dollar the organization raises for their training programs.  The Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) contracts with UMass Medical to both run these information sessions and manage the programs. If you could share these upcoming sessions with your providers who offer job readiness and or short term work related training programs, it could prove to be a valuable resource. To view a session near you click here.  To RSVP contact Eve Dolkart at 508/856-3148 or eve.dolkart@umassmed.edu

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS
Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually.  Seven to ten people -- parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, grandchildren and close friends -- deeply feel the devastation of each loss.
That means that approximately 5 million "survivors" are left behind every year.
Samaritans has expanded the number of sites on the Cape & Islands for their survivor support groups including Falmouth, Hyannis and Nantucket.  These groups honor and respect the needs of the survivors, provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.
