Welcome to the information E-Newsletter from Barnstable County Department of Human Services. DEPARTMENT'S CORNER | |
The Department of Public Health's Working on Wellness initiative, a Mass In Motion program, is currently recruiting 10-15 employers to participate in Phase V of the Working on Wellness initiative. As part of the initiative, employers receive training, technical assistance, resources and education around how to implement a comprehensive worksite initiative that focuses on creating a work environment that encourages employees to be healthy while at work. In addition to providing training and education, this initiative is about collaboration and resource sharing as we provide all working on wellness sites (past and current) with opportunities to collaborate with one another, share information/lessons learned/success stories etc. to help take wellness to the next level.

MASS COALITION FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION ANNUAL STATE HOUSE DAY | |
On Monday, February 6, 2012, the MCSP will hold its 13th Annual State House Day from 9:00 am to 12:00 Noon in the Great Hall. The highlight of the day is the presentation of the MCSP Leadership in Suicide Prevention Awards to persons or organization from communities across Massachusetts. Nominations come from coalition members and others who identify champions in suicide prevention deserving of statewide recognition.
Among this year's award recipients is Maura Weir from the Cape Cod Youth Suicide Prevention Project.

BOARD ROLES TO BOARD GOALS | |
The Cape Cod Foundation, through the generous support of the Bilezikian Family Foundation and the Edward Bangs Kelley and Elza Kelley Foundation, Inc., is pleased to offer a local training opportunity for nonprofit staff and Board members. PARKINSON'S DISEASE & SAFE DRIVING | |
"Driving and Parkinson's Disease" will be the topic of a FREE special presentation on Tuesday, February 7th beginning at 1:00 PM at the Bourne Council on Aging, 239 Main St., Buzzards Bay. Speakers will explore aspects of the disease and how Parkinson's can affect a driver's ability to function, including diminishing vision, hearing and reaction time. They will discuss the importance of a proper clinical evaluation and how Spaulding Rehab's Driver assessment Program can help individuals identify skills that need work, habits that need correction, or significant cognitive decline that may compromise an individual's safety behind the wheel.

BUSINESS SUMMIT FOR A HEALTHY WORKFORCE | |
The Chambers of Commerce of Falmouth, Mashpee, and Sandwich in conjunction with Barnstable County Human Services Suicide Prevention and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod will hold a Business Summit for a Healthy Workforce on Thursday, February 9, 2012 from 3:00 - 5:30 PM. The program is designed to provide support and resources to small businesses on the Upper Cape which may be dealing with workplace issues around depression, anxiety, chronic illness, substance abuse and suicide risks.

HOME PROGRAM PUBLIC HEARINGS | |
Attached are the HOME public hearing notices (English, Portuguese, Spanish) for February 14th from 5-6 pm here at the Cape Cod Commission. As the region's HOME program is facing a substantial (43%) cut, the CCC is looking for feedback/recommendations on what area(s) we should spend our much reduced allocation (378K) for the coming year. We also need to review and get recommendations on amending the annual goals for units and households assisted that were established in the 2010-2014 Consolidated Plan: 45 rental units; 10 homeownership units; and 25 down payment loans. If you cannot attend the hearing, we would welcome any written comments. SHELTER FROM THE STORM BENEFIT CONCERT | |
Cape Cod's top high school talent including dancers, singers and musicians, in concert February 17th @ 7:00 PM in the Tilden Auditorium at Cape Cod Community College. Tickets are $5.00 for students and $10.00 for the public. All proceeds from the concert will fund Duffy Health Center & the Veterans Outreach Center's collaborative services for our veterans. This is a Barnstable County Human Rights Academy project sponsored by Cape Cod Academy. Shelter From The Storm received the Planned Giving Council of Cape Cod Young Philanthropists Award. The concert has raised more than $40,000 since its inception five years ago. On February 1st from 5:30 - 7:00 PM at the Barnstable Tavern, Route 6A in Barnstable, come meet the students who are organizing the annual benefit concert for Cape Cod's veterans and Cape Cod's homeless. Get a taste of some of the talent who will perform at the concert. Meet folks from the Veterans Outreach Center and Duffy Health Center and hear about their plan to assist our returning veterans.

DETERMINATION OF NEED (DoN) GRANTS | |
CHNA 27 is seeking applications from organizations proposing to address issues that eliminate health disparities, promote wellness, and prevent/manage chronic disease for individuals who are elderly and/or persons with disabilities. During 2012, $70,000 will be distributed across the geographic area of CHNA 27 to selected eligible organizations through grants ranging from no less than $15,000 to no more than $40,000.
Funding for this grant is made possible by Cape Cod Healthcare through the Department of Public Health's Determination of Need (DoN) process. Any non-profit organization or public entity (such as schools, health institutions), not having access to other sources of DoN Funding, providing services to communities on Cape Cod and/or the Islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard is eligible to apply.
The Cape Cod Foundation is serving as grants manager for the project. Applications must be postmarked by February 17, 2012 or hand delivered to the Cape Cod Foundation by 5pm on February 17, 2012. YOUTH AT MALL NIGHT | |
The next Youth at Mall Night is scheduled for Friday, February 17th from 5 - 7:00 PM in the Macy's alcove at the Cape Cod Mall. Youth at Mall Night is a safe place for young people to meet their friends and enjoy watching appropriate entertainment performed by their peers. February 17th entertainment will feature a performance by the Cape Cod Hip Hop Dancers and Atlantic Academy of Dance.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING LOTTERY | |
Our First Home Inc. is now accepting applications for a lottery to be held to determine order for buying 1, 2 and 3 bedroom homes. All interested parties should attend the Informational Session on Tuesday, February 21, 20112 at 6:30 PM at Yarmouth Town Hall, Rte. 28, South Yarmouth. The preliminary application, program details and lottery process will be discussed.
Application Deadline: 5 pm, Monday, March 26, 2012. Applications may be obtained at Yarmouth Town Hall, Yarmouth Public Libraries and also by emailing Mike@ourfirsthomeinc.org. WOMEN'S INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE FOR PEACE & FREEDOM | |
The Cape Cod branch of the Women's International League for Peace & Freedom (WILPF) is sponsoring a reception for and address by WILPF's International Secretary General, Madeleine Rees, at the Cape Cod Cultural Center, 307 Old Main St., S. Yarmouth, 3 pm on Saturday, March 3rd. Madeleine Rees was the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights in Bosnia-Herzegovina, portrayed by Vanessa Redgrave in the recent film "The Whistleblower." PLANNED GIVING COUNCIL RENAMED ~ NEW BOARD MEMBER NAMED | |
Planned Giving Council Renamed to be Philanthropy Partners of the Cape and Islands
During its recent annual meeting, the membership of the Planned Giving Council of Cape Cod voted to change the organization's name. "We have been discussing the name change for a while as the old name really did not quite cover all of our activities, which are aimed at the greater community of non-profits and estate planners on Cape Cod and the Islands."
In addition, Brenda Swain, Executive Director of the Falmouth Service Center joins the board with an impressive background in fundraising.

DOT, NHTSA Unveil New Website to Engage Teens on Distracted Driving:- The new "OMG" public service announcements are not the only thing we've been working on to raise awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. And that's why we created Distraction.gov/teens. The site is designed to inform teens about the hazards and different types of distracted driving, involve them in signing a pledge to not drive distracted, and inspire action when they see someone else engaging in this risky behavior.

MASS 2-1-1 is a project supported by the Barnstable County Department of Human Services in partnership with the Cape & Islands United Way.

The Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) is available 24/7/365 to provide confidential counseling and referrals for Veterans and their families. SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS | | Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually. Seven to ten people -- parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, grandchildren and close friends -- deeply feel the devastation of each loss. That means that approximately 5 million "survivors" are left behind every year.
Samaritans has expanded the number of sites on the Cape & Islands for their survivor support groups including Falmouth, Hyannis and Nantucket. These groups honor and respect the needs of the survivors, provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.

HOMELESSNESS CRISIS HOTLINE | | Serving individuals & families in the communities of Barnstable County, Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Immediate local emergency housing, food and transportation available. Referral to the right resources for assistance, assessment and on-going support. If you or someone you know, are in crisis and have no place to stay tonight, call the Crisis Hotline at 1-888-656-2233 to connect with an experienced advocate who can arrange local overnight emergency housing until the next business day. You will meet with an advocate the following day to help you access available resources and supportive services.
