Welcome to the information E-Newsletter from Barnstable County Department of Human Services. This newsletter is designed to provide timely information on health and human service topics of interest for people living and working in Barnstable County. YOUTH EDUCATION AND SUPPORT PROGRAM | |
The Youth Education and Support Program (Y.E.S.) addresses current teen topics young people want to discuss and know more about. The Barnstable Youth Services Division would like to invite teens to the next Y.E.S. program for a discussion about drug prevention and awareness of new drugs such as bath salts. The discussion will be held in the United Cultures Room at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center on Friday, February 3rd, from 4:45 - 6:30 PM. Special guest speaker will be Jean Calvert, LICSW, of the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health.

DIVORCE BOOT CAMP | |
Divorce Boot Camp led by Attorney Anna Merrill is scheduled for Saturday, February 4, 2012 from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM in the Conference Room at the Cape Cod Regional Transit Center, 215 Iyannough Rd., Hyannis. SUICIDE PREVENTION TRAINING FOR GATEKEEPERS OF OLDER ADULTS | |
This gatekeeper training led by the Samaritans on Cape Cod and the islands is designed to reduce the incidence of suicide among adults age 55 and older Gatekeepers are people who, through their professional, personal, or volunteer activities, have contact with older adults. After the training, participants will be able to: understand the warning signs of suicide in older adults; develop strategies for early intervention and prevention; identify risk factors, levels or risk, and protective factors for suicide in older adults; and learn effective methods for active listening and engagement with older adults who are suicidal.
The training is scheduled for Tuesday, February 7, 2012 from 9:00 am - 3:00 pm at Sandwich Hollows, 1 Round Hill Rd., East Sandwich, MA. This training is available FREE of charge. 5.5 Continuing Education Units (CEU's) will be offered to Registered Nurses, Social Workers, and Licensed Mental Health Clinicians. All participants will receive a certificate of attendance.

ADOLESCENT HEALTH TRAINING | |
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health Office of Adolescent Health and Youth Development will be offering a training HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 as part of our series of capacity-building, adolescent sexual health and youth development trainings open to service providers, community-based organizations and potential vendors who provide adolescent sexuality health education, adolescent reproductive health education and/or services, and youth development programs for young people ages 10-24.
These are FREE trainings limited to 50 participants ~ early registration is strongly recommended! Free parking, CEUs, and complementary lunch are provided. Workshop will be held at the Hoagland-Pincus Conference Center, 222 maple Ave., Shrewsbury, MA. Click here to register.

BUSINESS SUMMIT FOR A HEALTHY WORKFORCE | |
The Chambers of Commerce of Falmouth, Mashpee, and Sandwich in conjunction with Barnstable County Human Services Suicide Prevention and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod will hold a Business Summit for a Healthy Workforce on Thursday, February 9, 2012 from 3:00 - 5:00 PM. The program is designed to provide support and resources to small businesses on the Upper Cape which may be dealing with workplace issues around depression, anxiety, chronic illness, substance abuse and suicide risks.

DETERMINATION OF NEED (DoN) GRANTS | |
CHNA 27 is seeking applications from organizations proposing to address issues that eliminate health disparities, promote wellness, and prevent/manage chronic disease for individuals who are elderly and/or persons with disabilities. During 2012, $70,000 will be distributed across the geographic area of CHNA 27 to selected eligible organizations through grants ranging from no less than $15,000 to no more than $40,000.
Funding for this grant is made possible by Cape Cod Healthcare through the Department of Public Health's Determination of Need (DoN) process. Any non-profit organization or public entity (such as schools, health institutions), not having access to other sources of DoN Funding, providing services to communities on Cape Cod and/or the Islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard is eligible to apply.
The Cape Cod Foundation is serving as grants manager for the project. Applications must be postmarked by February 17, 2012 or hand delivered to the Cape Cod Foundation by 5pm on February 17, 2012. POSTPARTUM DEPRESSION - SCREENING AND TREATMENT METHODS WORKSHOP | |
The Cape & Islands Maternal Depression Task Force invites you to participate in this workshop. This workshop is intended for Primary Care Providers, APRN, OB/GYN, Pediatric Providers, Psychiatric Nurses, Emergency Room Physicians, Psychiatrists. The workshop is scheduled for Thursday, April 12, 2012 from 7 - 9:00 AM (6:30 - 7:00 AM breakfast and check-in) at the Daniel Webster Inn, 149 Main St., Sandwich. The Fee is $20 per person and CME's and CEU's are available. Objectives: review the signs and symptoms of postpartum depression, treatment methodologies, and psychopharmacological aspects of a treatment plan, including issues pertaining to breastfeeding/lactation.

Eligibility is simple. There are only two requirements: 1. Anyone facing a life-limiting illness and 2. Patient desires hospice services. All costs related to the diagnosis are covered in full. COMMUNITY INITIATED RESEARCH RFP | | The Community Health Innovation and Research Program of Harvard Catalyst (HC-CHIRP) announces the availability of funds to support community-initiated research on mental health integration in Primary Care using evidence-based practices. HC-CHIRP will fund up to three (3) community-initiated small research projects at this time ($7,000 each).
Applicants must be a community-based organization or coalition. Applicants must represent a 501(c)(3) tax exempt community-based organization including health, social service organizations; faith-based organizations; or voluntary associations or their fiscal agent.

VETERANS CRISIS HOTLINE | |
The VA has rebranded the National Veterans Suicide Prevention Hotline to what is now called Veterans Crisis Line. The purpose of the change is to shift the emphasis from "suicide" to "crisis" for Veterans and their families to make that critical first call for help. The Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) is available 24/7/365 to provide confidential counseling and referrals for Veterans and their families. This is an integrated national outreach effort to increase awareness and use of the Veterans Crisis Line, support and promote broader VA suicide prevention efforts, and promote help-seeking behaviors among Veterans at risk of suicide and other mental health problems.

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS | | Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually. Seven to ten people -- parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, grandchildren and close friends -- deeply feel the devastation of each loss. That means that approximately 5 million "survivors" are left behind every year.
Samaritans has expanded the number of sites on the Cape & Islands for their survivor support groups including Falmouth, Hyannis and Nantucket. These groups honor and respect the needs of the survivors, provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.

HOMELESSNESS CRISIS HOTLINE | | Serving individuals & families in the communities of Barnstable County, Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Staffed by trained homelesness prevention advocates. Immediate local emergency housing, food and transportation available. Referral to the right resources for assistance, assessment and on-going support.
If you or someone you know, are in crisis and have no place to stay tonight, call the Crisis Hotline at 1-888-656-2233 to connect with an experienced advocate who can arrange local overnight emergency housing until the next business day. You will meet with an advocate the following day to help you access available resources and supportive services.
The crisis hotline is a regional innovation pilot project funded by a grant to CACCI by Barnstable County through the Cape & Islands Regional Network to End Homelessness from the Massachusetts Interagency Council on Housing and Homelessness.
