ESSENTIAL SKILLS FOR ALZHEIMER CARE SERIES

Good communication is essential when providing care for a family member in mid-to-later stage dementia.  Learning successful ways to start conversations and activities makes daily tasks, like dressing and meals, less stressful.  Learning how to respond to difficult questions can help avoid disagreements.  When you are talking, laughing or reminiscing, you're both more likely to go through the day in a lighter mood.

Thursday, March 1, 2012, 1 - 3:00 PM at Elder Services of Cape Cod & the Islands, 68 Route 134, South Dennis.  First in a series of new skills-based programs designed with family caregivers in mind.  No professional caregivers please.  Pre-registration is required.  Visit www.alz.org/MANH or call 800/272-3900.

SMILES ABOUND!

The Oral Health Excellence Collaborative (OHEC) is pleased to announce that we have received funding to expand and enhance access to oral health services for elders.  With funds from the MA Dental Society Foundation, the Kelley Foundation, the Whitcomb Family Trust through the Cape Cod Foundation, Cape Cod Five Charitable Foundation Trust and Community Benefits of Cape Cod Healthcare, OHEC will focus on the dental needs of low-income elders in 2012.  Cape Cod Dentists Care (CCDC), the highly successful OHEC program in partnership with the Cape Cod District Dental Society, will link income-eligible Cape and Islanders age 60 and older to one of 80 participating local dentists.  These dentists provide care at a very reduced fee paid by the patient at the time of service.

In addition, OHEC looks forward to collaborating with interested COA's to recruit and train SMILE counselors to offer oral health education, information and referral.  We also will be working with outreach workers to include questions about oral health status when they make home visits and refer those in need of care to OHEC or a SMILE counselor.

Elders in need of access to affordable dental care can contact Cheila Mageste, program coordinator, at 508771-1375 to see if they are eligible for CCDC or other low-cost dental services.

SNOW STORM RELATED INJURIES

People don't realize, but shoveling and snow-blowing snow is a cardiovascular activity.  Pushing and throwing snow is an exhaustive activity.  Maneuvering a snow-blower and shoveling heavy wet snow spikes a heart rate quickly.  Snow-blowers save countless lower-backs by clearing snow with ease, however, many adult operators overexert themselves leading to injuries that could have been avoided.

Snow-blower injuries frequently occur when the job is almost done.  The most common scenario is when the chute becomes clogged, the machine is turned off, and the person inserts their hand to clear the snow.  Unfortunately, the blades are often still moving, causing injuries which are extremely painful since nerve endings are concentrated in the finger tips.  If the snow-blower becomes clogged, always use a stick to dislodge any snow or ice within the snow-blowers augers.  To avoid serious injuries take breaks - fighting through fatigue can result in more harm than good.

This information has been forwarded on behalf of the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network.
