Berkshire AHEC (Area Health Education Centers) has been selected to host the New England Region Trainer Workshop for Veterans Project. A Boston area training will be scheduled for early 2012 and will focus on improving the mental/behavioral health services for returning veterans and their families. The approach is to provide civilian health professionals continuing education opportunities that can increase their knowledge and skill in caring for returning veterans.
Relying heavily on the established research and data from the Citizens Soldiers Support Program, the goal was to identify locations that would allow for the maximum number of staff to be able to attend the works hops while being sensitive to the high need areas for mental/behavioral services to returning veterans.

CAN HOUSING KEEP YOU HEALTHY? | |
We know that much of what influences our health happens outside of the doctor's office - in our homes, schools, workplaces and neighborhoods. Communities that have walkable streets, access to healthy foods, and safe, affordable homes can help children and families lead healthy lives. Policymakers and other leaders outside the health sector are increasingly seeing these connections.
In an opinion piece in today's Roll Call, Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, MD, MBA, president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Raphael Bostic, PhD, assistant secretary for policy development and research at the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development, look closely at the role of housing in health. Lavizzo-Mourey and Bostic state definitively: housing policy is health policy.
Read the article and the companion interview with Raphael Bostic on NewPublicHealth to learn more about how improving housing can improve health.

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS | | Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually. Seven to ten people -- parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, grandchildren and close friends -- deeply feel the devastation of each loss. That means that approximately 5 million "survivors" are left behind every year.
Samaritans has expanded the number of sites on the Cape & Islands for their survivor support groups including Falmouth, Hyannis and Nantucket. These groups honor and respect the needs of the survivors, provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.
