MASS 2-1-1 is a free, confidential, 24/7 information and referral database and hotline for access to health and human services for consumers and providers. Multi-lingual translations are also available. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has designated it as the official point of contact for receiving emergency information during a time of crisis.
MASS 2-1-1 is a project supported by the Barnstable County Department of Human Services in partnership with the Cape & Islands United Way.

RFP - REGIONAL NETWORK TO ADDRESS HOMELESSNESS | |
Request for Proposals: Barnstable County, through its Chief Procurement Office and on behalf of the Department of Human Services, seeks a qualified contractor to assist the Department in coordination of the "Regional Network to Address Homelessness". The maximum amount available for this contract is $40,000.
The RFP and submission requirements were released on Thursday, S eptember 8th and will be available on the Barnstable County Purchasing website: http://purchasing.barnstablecounty.org. Please forward this information to interested parties.

YOUTH SPORTS CONCUSSIONS | |
On Monday, September 19th at 6:00 PM, Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod, 311 Service Rd., Sandwich presents concussion and the Young Athlete: Diagnosis and Management. The presentation, sponsored by the Barnstable High School Hockey Program, is specificallly designed for coaches and parents of young athletes and is free to the general public. Seating is limited and pre-registratoin is strongly recommended. Pre-register for this lecture by calling Spaulding Cape Cod at 508/833-4210 or online at www.spauldingcapecod.org, under "events". Spaulding Cape Cod is a member of the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network and affiliated with Mass General and Brigham and Women's hospitals.

3rd Annual De-Stress Express 5K and 10K Road Race & Walk will be held on Saturday, September 24 at 9:30 AM beginning at the Village Green on Main St. in Hyannis. AARP DRIVER SAFETY PROGRAM | |
This 4 hour class will provide practical techniques on how to adjust to changes in vision, hearing and reaction time and give you a thorough review of the "rules of the road" and our challenging driving environment with an emphasis on safety strategies. Workshop will be held on September 20th, 12:30 - 4:30 PM at the Barnstable Senior Center, 825 Falmouth Rd., Hyannis. Fees: $12.00 for AARP members and $14.00 for non-members and can be paid to the instructor the day of the class. Call 508/862-4750 to RSVP.

HUD APPLICATION ANNOUNCEMENT | |
The Cape & Islands Regional Neetwork to Address Homelessness Continuum of Care Committee announces the opportunity for a New Permanent Housing Bonus Project. The funds available for this project are $45,849. The Concept Paper submission for this New HUD project FY11 HUD Continuum of Care Competition is DUE to the CoC Committee NO LATER THAN 12 Noon on September 30, 2011. MLK DAY OF SERVICE PROJECTS | |
Barnstable County's AmeriCorps Cape Cod is seeking projects for the 2012 Martin Luther King Day of Service. Let them know about an identified need and AmeriCorps could partner with your organization by planning, managing, and funding your project idea on Martin Luther King Day. All projects must be completed on January 16, 2012 utilizing community volunteers.
AmeriCorps Cape Cod has applied for funding for this service project and may be granted up to $5,000 to enhance the project. All interested parties must complete and return the 'Intent to Apply' form by October 3, 2011 to be considered. MLK Day of Service project proposals are due on October 14, 2011. As always, they are excited to work with a variety of community partners and meet needs that might otherwise not be fulfilled without the force of 26 AmeriCorps members, hundreds of leveraged volunteers and grant funding.

Dental disease has become the most chronic earlly childhood disease, 5 times more common than asthma. People with gum disease have a greater risk of developing heart disease. Over 30% of people living with diabetes have 6+ teeth missing. learn more about the importance of oral health and bringing oral health resources to your community. Network and brainstorm with other Community Health Workers. Attend a FREE 3-hour session Oral Health - Making the Connection to Overall Health, developed by Central Mass AHEC in collaboration with the Mass Association of Community Health Workers on September 20th or October 4th at Central MA AHEC, Inc./OWTI, 35 Harvard St., Suite 300, Worcester. The Barnstable Youth Services Division invites young people between 14 - 19 years old to the first Youth Education Support program of the school season on Friday, October 7th, 4:45 - 6:30 PM in the United Cultures Room at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center. The topic will be an education discussion about teen pregnancy awareness & prevention. A light supper will be served. NEW ENGLAND HUD VA CONFERENCE | |
SAVE THE DATE, November 4, 2011, Boston, MA and mark your calendars for the upcoming New England HUD-VA Conference, "Ending Homelessness Among Veterans". Conference will equip participants with tools and tips to best support homeless veterans and their families.

AARP LAUNCHES PROGRAM TO ASSIST VULNERABLE OLDER AMERICANS | |
AARP Foundation launched a $2 million program to support nonprofit organizations to improve the lives of low-income Americans age 50 and older. The AARP Foundation Grants Program will focus on four impact areas: hunger, housing, income and personal connections and in 2011 will award approximately $2 million in two of those areas: hunger and income. Through the Hunger Innovation Grants Program, the foundation will award grants ranging from $50,000 to $300,000 for sustainable solutions that make a significant impact on community food security and sustainable food systems. Applications from eligible organizations will be accepted through October 15 and recipients will be announced in December. The Recession Recovery Grants Initiative, will issue an RFP focused on programs that provide a continuum of services designed to protect families from severe financial instability. Grants ranging from $50,000 to $200,000 over one to two years will be awarded by the end of the year to organizations providing literacy and job training or access to services that offer job placement and increase financial stability. VETERANS CRISIS HOTLINE | |
The VA has rebranded the National Veterans Suicide Prevention Hotline to what is now called Veterans Crisis Line. The purpose of the change is to shift the emphasis from "suicide" to "crisis" for Veterans and their families to make that critical first call for help. The Veterans Crisis Line (1-800-273-8255, Press 1) is available 24/7/365 to provide confidential counseling and referrals for Veterans and their families. This is an integrated national outreach effort to increase awareness and use of the Veterans Crisis Line, support and promote broader VA suicide prevention efforts, and promote help-seeking behaviors among Veterans at risk of suicide and other mental health problems.

HEALTHY CONNECTED CAPE COD | | The "Healthy Connected Cape Cod" project promotes opportunities to access good, nutritious food and to share the abundance of this food with neighbors and friends.
Goals: - Support existing programs and practices that encourage happy and healthy eating
- Increase awareness of and participation in food-centered activities
- Increase healthy food options at all Cape Cod food pantries
- Promote community-driven advocacy and public education around healthy and happy eating.

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS | | Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually. Seven to ten people -- parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, grandchildren and close friends -- deeply feel the devastation of each loss. That means that approximately 5 million "survivors" are left behind every year.
Samaritans has expanded the number of sites on the Cape & Islands for their survivor support groups including Falmouth, Hyannis and Nantucket. These groups honor and respect the needs of the survivors, provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.

HOMELESSNESS CRISIS HOTLINE | | Serving individuals & families in the communities of Barnstable County, Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Staffed by trained homelesness prevention advocates. Immediate local emergency housing, food and transportation available. Referral to the right resources for assistance, assessment and on-going support.
If you or someone you know, are in crisis and have no place to stay tonight, call the Crisis Hotline at 1-888-656-2233 to connect with an experienced advocate who can arrange local overnight emergency housing until the next business day. You will meet with an advocate the following day to help you access available resources and supportive services.
The crisis hotline is a regional innovation pilot project funded by a grant to CACCI by Barnstable County through the Cape & Islands Regional Network to End Homelessness from the Massachusetts Interagency Council on Housing and Homelessness.
