This newsletter is designed to provide timely information on health and human service topics of interest for people living and working in Barnstable County. OCTOBER IS DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS MONTH | |
Independence House sponsored events:
Domestic Violence Awareness Month Breakfast on October 1 @ 8:00 AM at the Cape Codder Resort & Spa, 1225 Iyannough Rd., Hyannis. This year's event will feature Dr. Elizabeth Englander, Ph.D who will be discussing "Bullying & Domestic Violence: Power in Relationships". BARNSTABLE SENIOR CENTER CLASSES | | Barnstable Senior Center is offering evening exercise classes in Pilates, Mindful Yoga, and Zumba. Class Begins the week of September 13th and runs for 6-8 weeks between 5:00 and 8:00 PM. Fees vary per class and are handicap accessible. Barnstable Senior Center is located at 825 Falmouth Rd. WALK-A-THON & FAMILY FUN DAY | | 2010 Walk-A-Thon and Family Fun Day to benefit Community Connections Programs will be held on Saturday, September 18th. Registration opens at 10:30 AM - Kick-off 11:00 AM. Games and entertainment for kids of all ages.

SAMARITAN VOLUNTEER TRAINING | |
The Samaritans on Cape Cod and the Islands will be conducting sessions beginning on September 22, 2010 for both Crisis Line and Senior Outreach volunteers. Candidates are invited to visit our website at www.capesamaritans.org to learn about who we are and what we do. We have trained 724 volunteers over the past 32 years, and we are committed to carrying on our proud tradition of service to the community. SKILL BUILDING FOR CAREGIVERS | |
Responding to the growing needs of informal and family Caregivers of Elders 60 years of age and over for education on caring for an elder, Community Action Committee of Cape Cod & Islands has developed a community outreach training program. This training is for those who connect with caregivers and would like to offer them support and instruction in skill building techniques, such as mobility and stress relief. This training is open to all parish nurses, faith-based wellness programs, service providers, and informal and family caregivers. Included in the resources provided will be a free Skill-Building DVD and Handbook to go directly to elders and their caregivers.

AFP DIVERSITY FELLOWS PROGRAM | |
The AFP Diversity Fellows Program is designed to encourage diversity within the fundraising field. The program offers mentorship, training and networking opportunities to connect development professions from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds who work at local, grassroots organizations to the people and resources they need to further the mission of their organizations.

SUICIDE PREVENTION TRAINING CALENDAR | | The Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Suicide Prevention Program Workshop Calendar is now available. DPH is offering workshops from September - December and will be adding more workshops throughout the year. When registering for a workshop please note that each event has tabs titled with information regarding the workshop. Space is limited for each workshop and fills up quickly, so please register before the deadline.

PROMOTING PREVENTION AFFORDABLE CARE ACT | | New England Journal of Medicine: Promoting Prevention through the Affordable Care Act. Too many people in our country are not reaching their full potential for health because of preventable conditions. Moreover, Americans receive only about half of the preventive services that are recommended!

ATTORNEY GENERAL ANNOUNCES GRANT OPPORTUNITIES | |
Attorney General Martha Coakley's Office is accepting grant applications from municipalities and non-profit organizations aimed at promoting health and wellness in underserved populations and reducing health disparities in Massachusetts. Grants that provide a maximum of $250,000 over a two-year period will be awarded to qualified organizations that can develop problems that will benefit residents by reducing health disparities, manage chronic diseases and/or promote wellness in underserved populations. A total of $1.5 million in grants will be awarded in November.
Successful applicants will propose data-driven, evidence-based programs to address identified needs. Interested applicants can visit the Attorney General's website for additional information. The application deadline is October 15, 2010. The grant money will be awarded on or around November 15, 2010 and will be for the two-year period beginning January 3, 2011 and ending December 31, 2012.

MID CAPE FARMER'S MARKET | | At the request of customers, the Mid-Cape Farmer's Market has extended its seeason into the autumn months. Beginning Wednesday, September 15th the market will also change its hours to every Wednesday from 3-6 PM to better serve customers. The market is located at the Hyannis Youth & Community Center, 141 Bassett Lane in Hyannis. Locally grown vegetables, fruit, herbs, lobsters, shellfish, and locally produced bread, pastries, honey, candles, soap, and more are sold at the market.

JOB OPPORTUNITIES - INDEPENDENCE HOUSE | | Independence House has the following positions available:
Receptionist/Advocate - part-time (22.5 hrs/wk)
Responsibilities include: closing agency, answering main telephone, maintaining reception area appearance, greeting/assisting clients & visitors and various clerical office duties. An A.S. degree preferred, equivalent experience considered; high school diploma required.
Child Care Worker - part-time (15 hrs/wk)
Position requires providing child care and help develop and maintain a safe, nurturing and non-violent environment for children who have experienced domestic violence and who most often times may be in crisis. Experience and commitment to children, experience working with children and/or women in crisis, good written and oral communication skills, ability to work under stress and crisis related situations and knowledge of domestic violence related issues. A.S, high school diploma and/or GED with related experience.

HEALTHY CONNECTED CAPE COD | | The "Healthy Connected Cape Cod" project promotes opportunities to access good, nutritious food and to share the abundance of this food with neighbors and friends.
Goals:
- Support existing programs and practices that encourage happy and healthy eating
- Increase awareness of and participation in food-centered activities
- Increase healthy food options at all Cape Cod food pantries
- Promote community-driven advocacy and public education around healthy and happy eating.

CAPE COD VOLUNTEER INITIATIVE | |
Cape Cod Foundation is proud to introduce an exciting new resource for non-profits: CAPE COD VOLUNTEERS. The vision of Cape Cod Volunteers is to create a network of organizations and opportuities that informs, inspires, and engages people of all ages and backgrounds to strengthen our community through volunteering. Cape Cod Volunteers links local people with meaningful volunteer opportunities.
Please visit our new website and register your organization at www.capecodvolunteers.org. It will take 15-30 minutes to create a thorough profile for your organization. Once your profile is created you can post as many volunteer opportunities as you like, specify what kind of volunteer would best fit your organization's needs, how many volunteers you need, how often you need them and what kind of skills would be helpful. You can also solicit in-kind donations, list board openings and interview potential candidates. Whether you need volunteers for day-to-day tasks, help with events, or to share their expertise, volunteeers are an invaluable resource. The more organizations that post opportunities, the more effective the network will be and the more the community will benefit. Since our public release in July, more than 1700 prospective volunteers (about 29/day) have visited www.capecodvolunteers.org to peruse the more than 100 volunteer opportunities listed. Register today to start recruiting them.

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS | | Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually. Seven to ten people -- parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, grandchildren and close friends -- deeply feel the devastation of each loss.
That means that approximately 5 million "survivors" are left behind every year.
Samaritans has expanded the number of sites on the Cape & Islands for their survivor support groups including Falmouth, Hyannis and Nantucket. These groups honor and respect the needs of the survivors, provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.

24/7 HOMELESSNESS CRISIS HOTLINE |
|
Serving individuals & families in the communities of Barnstable County, Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Staffed by trained homelesness prevention advocates. Immediate local emergency housing, food and transportation available. Referral to the right resources for assistance, assessment and on-going support.
If you or someone you know, are in crisis and have no place to stay tonight, call the Crisis Hotline at 1-888-656-2233 to connect with an experienced advocate who can arrange local overnight emergency housing until the next business day. You will meet with an advocate the following day to help you access available resources and supportive services.
The crisis hotline is a regional innovation pilot project funded by a grant to CACCI by Barnstable County through the Cape & Islands Regional Network to End Homelessness from the Massachusetts Interagency Council on Housing and Homelessness.

MASS 2-1-1 is a free, confidential, 24/7 information and referral database and hotline for access to health and human services for consumers and providers. Multi-lingual translations are also available. The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has designated it as the official point of contact for receiving emergency information during a time of crisis.
MASS 2-1-1 is funded by 19 local chapters of the United Way, MEMA and the Executive Office of Health & Human services. Locally the Barnstable County Department of Human Services in partnership with the Cape & Islands United Way are supporting and marketing MASS 2-1-1.
