PEACE BUILDERS AWARDS
The Town of Barnstable No Place for Hate Committee is introducing "Peace Builders", recognizing regular citizens in Barnstable who do "random acts of kindness" to help build community in the town.  Peace Builders are people who are willing to stand up for others in the face of conflict, violence, discrimination, racism or hatred. The Barnstable No Place for Hate Committee is looking for stories to share with the whole community.  Each recipient will be recognized by the Committee and selected stories will be published in our local newspapers.  The only requirements are that you and the person you nominate be residents of the Town of Barnstable, and that the person nominated has not received any other kind of recognition for their act of kindness.

For more information and/or electronic application to nominate someone for a Peace Builders Award please contact Janice Barton by email at [email protected]

DISABILITY POLICY CONSORTIUM
While Universal Healthcare has been the rallying cry of adovocates for healthcare reform in Massachusetts, a quieter, but no less important focus has been on healthcare disparities and the need for increased public health leadership to reduce these disparities.  Helping to lay the foundation for healthcare reform is data on racial and cultural disparities, along with advocacy on behalf of those who have clearly been racially, ethnically and culturally discriminated against by the previous healthcare and insurance system.  Everyone in Massachusetts, even the most privileged members of society, is but one car accident, one serious infection, one fall or one heart attack away from suffering the same healthcare disparities as the most vulnerable members of society such as the poor, the homeless and minorities.

Although healthcare entities have successfullly focused efforts on compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, it is time to widen the focus and reduce disparities in health outcomes and at-risk behaviors for people with disabilities.  A full report on Disparities and Disabilities may be downloaded from the Publications menu of the DPC website at www.dpcma.org or by clicking on this direct link:  http://www.dpcma.org/Publications/tabid/423/Default.aspx

NATIONAL HIV/AIDS STRATEGY
On July 13, President Obama announced the need for new actions to prevent HIV infection and better serve people living with HIV.  The National HIV/AIDS Strategy Federal Implementation Plan identifies specific actions to be taken by Federal agencies, including HRSA, to implement the strategy's goals.  This will be accomplished by working in new ways across agency lines as well as through enhanced and innovative partnerships with State, tribal and local governments.  Success will require the commitment of all parts of society, including businesses, faith communities, phalanthropic organizations, scientific and medical communities, educational insstitutions, people living with HIV, and others.

More information on this initiative can be found at www.aids.gov

CAPE COD VOLUNTEER INITIATIVE
Cape Cod Foundation is proud to introduce an exciting new resource for non-profits: CAPE COD VOLUNTEERS.  The vision of Cape Cod Volunteers is to create a network of organizations and opportuities that informs, inspires, and engages people of all ages and backgrounds to strengthen our community through volunteering.  Cape Cod Volunteers links local people with meaningful volunteer opportunities.

Please visit our new website and register your organization at www.capecodvolunteers.org.  It will take 15-30 minutes to create a thorough profile for your organization.  Once your profile is created you can post as many volunteer opportunities as you like, specify what kind of volunteer would best fit your organization's needs, how many volunteers you need, how often you need them and what kind of skills would be helpful.   You can also solicit in-kind donations, list board openings and interview potential candidates.
Whether you need volunteers for day-to-day tasks, help with events, or to share their expertise, volunteeers are an invaluable resource.  The more organizations that post opportunities, the more effective the network will be and the more the community will benefit.  The website will be introduced to the public in mid to late June.

SAMARITAN SURVIVOR SUPPORT GROUPS
Over 800,000 people worldwide end their lives annually.  Seven to ten people -- parents, children, siblings, aunts, uncles, grandparents, grandchildren and close friends -- deeply feel the devastation of each loss.

That means that approximately 5 million "survivors" are left behind every year.

Samaritans has expanded the number of sites on the Cape & Islands for their survivor support groups including Falmouth, Hyannis and Nantucket.  These groups honor and respect the needs of the survivors, provide unconditional emotional support, help survivors gain courage and comfort from one another, and deal with a unique grief that is often not understood by others.

For more information contact the Samaritans office at Tel: 508/548-7999
