Welcome to the information E-Newsletter from Barnstable County Department of Human Services.  This newsletter is designed to provide timely information on health and human service topics of interest for people living and working in Barnstable County. NEWS FROM MASHPEE VILLAGE
~ Community Connection Day at Mashpee Village ~ Sunday May 2nd from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.  Please come and joing us to clean-up our common areas.  Will include a Clam Bake, BBQ & Dessert Contest when all the work is done.  You may bring your favorite dish or dessert to share.  Call Donna, Resident Services at 508/477-3429 to RSVP.

PARKINSON'S NETWORK DINNER DANCE
PARKINSON'S SUPPORT NETWORK DINNER DANCE
This newly formed Task Force includes Parkinson patients and caregivers as well as The American Parkinson Disease Association, Ma. Chapter, National Parkinson Foundation Cape Cod Chapter,  Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston Medical Center Parkinson Disease Movement Disorder Center, Cape Cod Healthcare, Rehabilitation Hospital of the Cape and Islands, Reaching Elders with Additional Community Help (REACH) and the Barnstable, Orleans, and Yarmouth Senior Centers.  
The Parkinson Support Network Task Force is working on a plan to bring comprehensive support services to the Cape to include education, exercise and support for Parkinson patients and their Caregivers.
These support services are being kicked off with a Spring/Fling dinner dance on May 23, 2010 from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Cape Codder Hotel in Hyannis. Rockin Blues music will be provided by The Flip Side.

Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased through May 2 by sending a check payable to BIDMC/Parkinson Support Network, 330 Brookline Avenue, 109 BR, Suite 270, Brookline, MA 02215 by May 2nd. Please include your name, address, telephone number and email.

5K RUN/WALK TO BENEFIT LIFE INC.
"Lovin' Life" 1st Annual 5K Run/Walk ~ Saturday, May 8, 2010.

HEALTHY LIVING EXPO
Emerald Physicians is sponsoring it's Healthy Living Expo at Barnstable High School's Performing Art Center, 433 West Main St., Hyannis on Saturday, May 8th from 8 AM to 4 PM.  Event will focus on promoting personal health topics such as heart health, Mediterranean diets & heart disease, the role of diet and cancer prevention, the benefits of a plant-based diet, preventing dementia through diet, the role of acupuncture in medicine, women's health, the science of stress reduction, and organic gardening for a healthier community.  Refreshments and a healthy fare lunch sampling will be provided and prizes will be raffled throughout the day.  This event is FREE to the public.

ARTS & ALZHEIMER'S FACILITATOR TRAINING
May 10 and 24 from 10:00 - 12:00 PM at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, Dennis
Learn about the powerful impact visual images can have on brain functioning and how this exciting program can help those with Alzheimer's disease or dementia access their long term memory.
This is a 2-part training intended for individuals who would like to become facilitators for the Arts & Alzheimer's initiative. Mentoring will be available post training. SENIOR EXPO & FASHION SHOW
Annual Senior Appreciation Expo and Fashion Show in honor of Older American's Month
 
Where:         Barnstable Senior Center, 825 Falmouth Rd., Hyannis
When:          May 14, from 10 AM to 1 PM
 
This year's national them is "Age Strong! Live Long!".  Whitehall Estate of Hyannis will provide a wonderful free Brunch Bar.  Vendors will be on hand to answer all health, living and wellness questions.  There will be a health room offering blood pressure readings, eye examinations and nutritional consultations.

EMPLOYMENT PARTNERSHIPS PROGRAM
New RFP just released by Commonwealth Corporation for the Employment Partnerships Program.  As part of Governor Patrick's Massachusetts Recovery Plan, the Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development seeks to support workforce development partnerships that connect Massachusetts residents and workers with jobs and to support Massachusetts companies by ensuring the availability of a skilled workforce to meet their business needs.  $1.490  million in total funds available, with individual awards anticipated in the $75,000 - $200,000 range.
 
These funds will support partnerships between Massachusetts employers and organizations that can deliver, coordinate and/or support training and job placement for workers.

Alzheimer's Services of Cape Cod & the Islands 18th Annual Cape Cod "Miles of Memories" Walk for Alzheimer's Services.

This funding opportunity will grant applications that propose research on health promotion, disease prevention, and health disparities that is jointly conducted by communities and researchers and targets medically underserved areas (MUAs) and medically underserved populations (MUPs).

MASSACHUSETTS JOBS & WORKFORCE SUMMIT
The Massachusetts Jobs and Workforce Summit will be held Tuesday June 22, 2010, from 10:00am to 4:00pm with registration and breakfast beginning at 9:00am and sessions to be followed by a reception. Governor Patrick will be the keynote speaker at the Jobs Summit, which will cover topics including: A View from the State House and Capitol Hill; Engaging Employers in the Workforce System; and Connecting Workers to Jobs. The Summit will be at the historic Publick House in Sturbridge, MA. The Summit is co- sponsored by the Workforce Solutions Group.

CVS OFFERS FUNDING
CVS Drugstore Chain Offers $25 Million to Fund Children's Disability Programs
 
QUICK SUMMARY: Over the next five years, CVS Caremark All Kids Can program is making $25 million available to make life easier for children with disabilities. Through this program, CVS will support nonprofit organizations that provide innovative programs and services in local communities focused on helping children with disabilities to learn, play and succeed in life. The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust awarded $6.3 million in grants to nonprofit organizations across the country in 2009.
DEADLINE: Oct. 31.
FUNDING FOCUS: The CVS Caremark Charitable Trust focuses primarily on supporting charitable organizations that are making a difference in the lives of children with disabilities. Resources are also allocated to help support organizations focused on providing healthcare to the uninsured.

NEW PARENTS INITIATIVE

The goal of the Massachusetts New Parent Initiative is to improve the health of new parents, infants and their families across the lifespan through enhancing communication between providers and new parents using emotion based messaging related to four focus areas of parent & infant mental health, nurturing early care giving, prevention of family violence and promotion of family planning.

PARENT ED & SUPPORT LIST
The Cape Cod Neighborhood Support Coalition compiles and distributes a free, monthly Cape and Islands-wide listing of workshops, meetings, groups and related programs for parents, grandparents, guardians and other primary caregivers of children. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to distribute this to families and to anyone who works with families.

The Department of Public Health has just released "Health of Massachusetts," a very comprehensive, user-friendly report that compiles data from over 50 sources and covers topics such as "Community Assets," "Mortality," Health Care Access," Health Care Quality," Natality and Early Childhood," "Infectious Disease," "Wellness and Chronic Disease,"  "Environmental Health," "Occupational Health,"   "Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Use," "Unintentional Injury," Suicide and Self Injury," "Violence," and "Mortality."  It also incorporates Health Disparities and policy perspectives throughout.
We welcome all of you to look and use this very important resource.

NSTAR'S NEW DEBT FORGIVENESS PROGRAM
New program offered by NSTAR for low income customers to pay off their old arrearages for gas and/or electric utility bills.  NSTAR will forgive past due balances over a period of time if customers pay a budgeted bill each month on time. Eligibility guidelines do apply.  Customers can sign up for the program over the phone at 1-866-315-2496

24/7 HOMELESSNESS CRISIS HOTLINE
Serving individuals & families in the communities of Barnstable County, Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.  Staffed by trained homelesness prevention advocates.  Immediate local emergency housing, food and transportation available.  Referral to the right resources for assistance, assessment and on-going support.
 
If you or someone you know, are in crisis and have no place to stay tonight, call the  Crisis Hotline at 1-888-656-2233 to connect with an experienced advocate who can arrange local overnight emergency housing until the next business day.  You will meet with an advocate the following day to help you access available resources and supportive services.
 
The crisis hotline is a regional innovation pilot project funded by a grant to CACCI by Barnstable County through the Cape & Islands Regional Network to End Homelessness from the Massachusetts Interagency Council on Housing and Homelessness.

MASS 2-1-1 RESOURCE LOCATOR
 
MASS 2-1-1 is a free, confidential, 24/7 information and referral database and hotline for access to health and human services for consumers and providers.  Multi-lingual translations are also available.  The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has designated it as the official point of contact for receiving emergency information during a time of crisis.  MASS 2-1-1 is funded by 19 local chapters of the United Way, MEMA and the Executive Office of Health & Human services.  Locally the Barnstable County Department of Human Services in partnership with the Cape & Islands United Way are supporting and marketing MASS 2-1-1.
