COUNTY GOVERNMENT - IT WORKS FOR YOU

4-C's SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Cape Cod Community College Educational Foundation has over 170 scholarships available to Cape Cod Community College graduating, current and incoming students.  Scholarships range from $500 to $4,000 each.

ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP COURSE
For members of Cape Cod's Immigrant Communities:  Learn about the environmental issues on Cape Cod and how you can make a difference, make connections with local organizations, explore opportunities in environmental careers.
 
Meets on Thursdays, April 15 - June 3 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM (includes coffee & dessert) @ Waquoit Bay Reserve in East Falmouth and the Hyannis Center of Cape Cod Community College.  This is a FREE training program thanks to funding from the Island Foundation.  $100 stipend for participants who complete a minimum of seven(7) or the eight (8) classes.  Some childcare provided - please ask.

YMCA  HEALTHY KIDS DAY
As part of a nationwide effort to encourage kids to get moving, the YMCA Cape Cod will host YMCA Healthy Kids Day on April 17, the nation's largest health day for kids and families.  This day is filled with fun, engaging and creative activities that foster healthy living and is part of the YMCA's larger efforts to help more kids and families become physically active.  Also provided: healthy family adult educational materials.

HEART HEALTHY EATING
Healthy eating is not just about the foods we should avoid, it's also about the food we should eat to lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and achieve an overall healthy eating pattern.  Class is lead by a registered dietitian with a fee of $25.00 (includes materials).  Bring a spouse, partner or caregiver at no extra charge.  Pre-registration and pre-payment required, credit cards accepted.

Patient navigation is an emerging role for Community Health Workers and has become the subject of national attention as health care providers recognize the vital role they play in improving a patient's experience and outcomes.

CCHC COMMUNITY BENEFITS IMPACT MINI-GRANTS
Cape Cod Healthcare Community Benefits is seeking applications from non-profit and public entities proposing to address time-limited health focused initiatives that address one or more of the five priorities outlined below.  Community Benefit Impact Mini-Grants (up to $5,000) are designed to assist these priorities which align with the strategic focus of CCHC to enhance the quality of and access to a comprehensive continuum of healthcare services for all people of Cape Cod.
 
DEADLINE:  Proposal (1 original, 4 copies) must be received by May 10, 2010 - 4:00 PM to CCHC, Community Benefits, 297 North Street, Ste 333, Hyannis, MA  02601.  100% of the Mini Grant funds must be used by September 30, 2010. 
 
Priorities FY2010:  1)  Access to quality health services for the underserved, under privileged and those with health disparities;  2) Care and education for the chronically ill; 3) Mental Health & Substance Abuse support; 4) Programs that promote Healthy Aging to our geriatric population; 5) Collaborate with other agencies and groups with emerging unmet community health needs; 6) Provide support to the community through the utilization of Determination of Need Community Health Initiative funds.

YOUTH AT MALL NIGHT

REGIONAL HOARDING RISK ASSESSMENT TRAINING MEETING
The Statewide S/C on Hoarding, the Local and Regional MA Hoarding Task Forces and MassHousing invite you to attend a Regional Hoarding Risk Asssessment Training Meeting for the Cape & Islands area.  Hoarding continues to be a challenging issue for public health and safety, the courts, housing managers, clinicians, social service professionals and others.  It is a complex problem that requires inter-disciplinary solutions.

APRIL - SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH
April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and Independence House is partnering with local libraries in an effort to expand public awareness of sexual abuse.  Blue and white flags, along with posters will be displayed at several library branches during the month of April. Each site will display 1 blue flag for every 5 white flags; representing 1 in 6 are victims of sexual assault. Libraries will have free Wi-Fi access and computers for use. Visitors are encouraged to login and visit the Independence House website.  On April 22nd, all day, Order from Uno Chicago Grill and have up to 20% of your checks value donated to Independence House.

ENERGY ASSISTANCE FOR LOW-INCOME PEOPLE
Energy Assistance & Utility Rights:  The winter moratorium is about to end, and thousands of low-income households will soon be facing shutoffs.  It is particularly important for utility customers to understand their legal rights during the spring and summer, when terminations are at their highest.  NCLC still has several thousand copies of their utility rights flyer, "Keeping the Heat and Lights On", available in English and Spanish.  To order either flyer in print send an email to consumerlaw@nclc.org  Put "Utility Flyer" in the subject line.  Or download the flyer by going to NCLC's "Energy, Utilities and Communications" page at http://www.nclc.org/issues/energy_and_utility/index.shtml

NSTAR'S NEW DEBT FORGIVENESS PROGRAM
New program offered by NSTAR for low income customers to pay off their old arrearages for gas and/or electric utility bills.  NSTAR will forgive past due balances over a period of time if customers pay a budgeted bill each month on time. 24/7 HOMELESSNESS CRISIS HOTLINE
Serving individuals & families in the communities of Barnstable County, Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.  Staffed by trained homelesness prevention advocates.  Immediate local emergency housing, food and transportation available.  Referral to the right resources for assistance, assessment and on-going support.
 
If you or someone you know, are in crisis and have no place to stay tonight, call the  Crisis Hotline at 1-888-656-2233 to connect with an experienced advocate who can arrange local overnight emergency housing until the next business day.  You will meet with an advocate the following day to help you access available resources and supportive services.
 
The crisis hotline is a regional innovation pilot project funded by a grant to CACCI by Barnstable County through the Cape & Islands Regional Network to End Homelessness from the Massachusetts Interagency Council on Housing and Homelessness.

MASS 2-1-1 RESOURCE LOCATOR
 
MASS 2-1-1 is a free, confidential, 24/7 information and referral database and hotline for access to health and human services for consumers and providers.  Multi-lingual translations are also available.  The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has designated it as the official point of contact for receiving emergency information during a time of crisis.  MASS 2-1-1 is funded by 19 local chapters of the United Way, MEMA and the Executive Office of Health & Human services.  Locally the Barnstable County Department of Human Services in partnership with the Cape & Islands United Way are supporting and marketing MASS 2-1-1.
