NATIONAL WOMEN'S HEALTH WEEK

11th ANNUAL CLOTHESLINE CONCERT
Concert to be held Saturday, March 20 @ 7:30 PM at the Nauset Regional High School Auditorium featuring Lisa Brown & the Nauset World Music Ensemble and special guest vocalist William Kellibrew.
 
A benefit for the Clothesline Project in its volunteer effort to educate and raise awareness concerning domestic violence - advancing the idea that all change begins at home.  Suggested donation: $15 adults, $10 students.  Tickets available at the door.

HIV UPDATE COMES TO MARTHA'S VINEYARD
First Annual HIV Update on Martha's Vineyard presented by the New England AIDS Education Training Center.  The program is targeted to medical, mental health & social service providers to enhance and advance care for persons with HIV.  CEU's will be provided for MD, PhD, ANP, RN and LICSW.

ALZHEIMER'S SERVICES EVENTS/WORKSHOPS
Dining with Dignity 11th Annual Spring Conference - April 20, 2010, 8:00 AM to 12 Noon at the Dennis Police Station.  Tips & strategies to maximize success and nutrition at mealtimes.  $50 tuition includes refreshments, materials & 3.6 CEU's.  Pre-registration required.
Miles of Memories Walk - May 16 on Nantucket & Martha's Vineyard, May 23 at the Canal and in Harwich and Wellfleet.  All funds raised will support programs and services for people with Alzheimer's disease, their families and caregivers.

COUNTY GOVERNMENT - IT WORKS FOR YOU

SUICIDE PREVENTION AMONG OLDER ADULTS
This training program is being offered by the Institute for Geriatric Social Work, Boston University School of Social Work.  This FREE 10 hour training, funded by the Dept. of Public Health, is being offered to health and mental health providers.  Training consists of a 4 hour online course, 3 face-to-face sessions from 9:30 AM to 11:45 AM on May 14, 21 and June 11 at the Duxbury Senior Center.  Applications must be received at IGSW by April 15, 2010.

WIB/JTEC - REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS
The Workforce Investment Board (WIB) workforce development system, is issuing the following RFP's on March 17, 2010. The Job Training & Employment Corporation (JTEC) is the administrative entity for funds designated to this region by the Workforce Investment Act.
 
Tri-Level Certified Nursing Assistant Training:  WIB is seeking group training for two cycles for FY2010 & FY2011: June & October 2010.  Training provided for individuals eligible through the ARRA WIA Adult and Dislocated Worker Programs. 
In-School Programs:  Youth Council and WIB are seeking year-round programs of activities and services for low-income youth who are seniors in high school for FY2011 program year (July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2011).
Out of School Program Services:  Youth Council and WIB are seeking services for low-income youth between the ages of 16 & 21 years of age who are out of school for the FY2011 program year (July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2011).  Three categories: academic instruction for pre-GED, GED and academic remediation; work experience site development and youth follow-up services; and mentoring.

COMMUNITY CARE OMBUDSMAN
The Community Care Ombudsman Program assists Massachusetts elders who are having problems with the health or social services they receive in their home or community, including home health care, homemaker services and adult day care. The Ombudsman: responds to inquiries from elders and their families, investigates and mediates complaints, educates about rights and responsibilities, counsels about concerns with services, refers to appropriate sources.  This is a FREE program of the Massachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs.

24/7 HOMELESSNESS CRISIS HOTLINE
Serving individuals & families in the communities of Barnstable County, Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.  Staffed by trained homelesness prevention advocates.  Immediate local emergency housing, food and transportation available.  Referral to the right resources for assistance, assessment and on-going support.
 
If you or someone you know, are in crisis and have no place to stay tonight, call the  Crisis Hotline at 1-888-656-2233 to connect with an experienced advocate who can arrange local overnight emergency housing until the next business day.  You will meet with an advocate the following day to help you access available resources and supportive services.
 
The crisis hotline is a regional innovation pilot project funded by a grant to CACCI by Barnstable County through the Cape & Islands Regional Network to End Homelessness from the Massachusetts Interagency Council on Housing and Homelessness.

COMMUNITY PREVENTION AND WELLNESS INITIATIVE
News Release: HHS Secretary Sebelius Announces the Availability of Recovery Act Funds for Community Prevention and Wellness Initiative.  The $10 million in funding is available to national public or private non-profit organizations to apply for cooperative agreements to help communities decrease smoking and obesity, increase physical activity and improve nutrition.

LOW INCOME WORKERS GET FREE TAX PREPARATION
Starts February 1st - Evenings, Daytime, and Weekend hours by Appointment Only at CACCI
 
In partnership with the IRS, Community Action Committee of Cape Cod & the Islands (CACCI), under its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, will provide free 2009 federal and Mass state income tax preparation services including assistance to file for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Many eligible low-income workers are not taking advantage of the EITC which is a refundable federal income tax credit that can put up to $5,657 in their pockets this tax season!  Clients may also take advantage of CACCI's other Asset Development Programs to strengthen their financial situation.

MASS 2-1-1 RESOURCE LOCATOR
 
MASS 2-1-1 is a free, confidential, 24/7 information and referral database and hotline for access to health and human services for consumers and providers.  Multi-lingual translations are also available.  The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has designated it as the official point of contact for receiving emergency information during a time of crisis.  MASS 2-1-1 is funded by 19 local chapters of the United Way, MEMA and the Executive Office of Health & Human services.  Locally the Barnstable County Department of Human Services in partnership with the Cape & Islands United Way are supporting and marketing MASS 2-1-1.
