Heartland Center Board of Directors. While Rod Armstrong and Craig Smith are new to our board, neither is new to our work. As director of the Nebraska Governor's Policy Research Office, Rod was instrumental in the preliminary research that led to the Heartland Center's Clues to Rural Community Survival. Craig, a longtime staff member at Rural Development Initiatives (RDI) in Oregon, was a key partner when the Heartland Center helped to develop strategic planning and leadership initiatives at RDI, which is considered one of the nation's leaders in the community development field. Craig and Rod officially join our board at our annual meeting in December.

Heartland Center Announces New Webinar Series on Social Media and Community Development
Great news! Because of the success of our past webinar series, we've designed a new group of topics that will showcase what we've learned about social media and community development. Starting in early 2011, this new series of three webinars is called Connecting the Community: Social Media that Works for You. Our next newsletter will announce exact dates and times.
Each webinar in the series will focus on the benefits of these technologies from a community improvement perspective. First, we'll explore Social Media that Creates Networks and take a look at the benefits of websites, blogs, E-newsletters, E-surveys and other tools. Webinars for Training and Working Together brings together information about how to design and use webinars for maximum impact. Finally, we'll explore Social Media and the Community and how social media and other technology options can create new communities of interest. Check your inbox for updates and additional details about this webinar series. You can also contact Kurt Mantonya for additional information. |
New Members Join the Heartland Center Board of Directors
The Heartland Center Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of two new members: Craig Smith of Oregon and Rod Armstrong of Nebraska, both long time friends and supporters of the Center's work. Craig is currently the executive director of Rural Development Initiatives, Inc. of Eugene, Oregon and has spent a long career delivering community services to small towns in that state. Craig first met Heartland Center staff nearly 15 years ago when the Center worked with RDI to design a community leadership program. He has served RDI for many years and has been the executive director for the last two.
Rod Armstrong is the director of the Lincoln office of the AIM Institute, an information technology non-profit and also serves as the vice president for strategic partnerships. Rod previously managed Nebraska.gov, the state's official web portal and has held a wide variety of policy-related positions in state government.

Donate to the Heartland Center The Heartland Center has, for 23 years, helped rural communities, urban neighborhoods, associations and other organizations develop local leadership, respond to community priorities and foster public participation through civic engagement. We've stayed on mission: Helping community leaders of today face the challenges of the future. We've collected case studies of successful small towns in Clues to Community Survival. We've developed training programs such as Helping Small Towns Succeed. We've completed curriculua for groups as diverse as the Ford Family Foundation in Oregon and the Federal Home Loan bank of Pittsburgh. We've been part of creating the exciting new HomeTown Competitiveness approach. Over the years, we've helped to organize town hall meetings all over the United States, to help communities plan for the future. We have also worked with municipal and county planning departments to boost public participation. While our staff numbers have remained small, we've found many skilled and valued associates across the country to help with the development and delivery of programs. But most importantly, we've found that the participants in our programs are leaders who genuinely want to take care of their own communities and learn more and better ways to do that job. We are seeking to increase our scholarship fund to help community leaders learn and prepare to face the challenges of the future. Your donation will help support scholarships to offset fees for participants at Helping Small Towns Succeed and in our thematic webinar series. Any gift you make is 100% tax deductible and will be used only for scholarship funds. To make a contribution, visit our secure donate page or click on the Paypal link below. You can also contact Kurt Mantonya for additional information.
