Separating Sunscreen
Fact from Fiction
With new federal rules for sunscreens set to take effect at the end of 2012, consumers stocking up this summer will, for the first time, see some products that meet specific criteria for broad-spectrum UV protection. Manufacturers will soon be required to scrap labels with misleading terms that overstate a product's capabilities, such as "waterproof" and "sunblock." It is recommended to choose a sunscreen with SPF 15 or greater, with a "broad spectrum" of protection against UVA and UVB radiation. To read more from the American Academy of Dermatology Association, please click here.

You should see a dermatologist for a check-up if you notice anything on your skin that lasts for two weeks or longer and is growing, changing shape, bleeding or itching. To see a dermatologist at Nantucket Cottage Hospital, or to take advantage of our teledermatology service with Massachusetts General Hospital, please call 508-825-8277.
