June 2012
| Help Us Deliver Care for the Next Generation
It costs $32 million to be Nantucket's only year-round, around-the-clock medical facility, with a 24/7 emergency department, 19 in-patient beds, primary care physicians and visiting specialists. As a nonprofit community hospital, we receive funding from medical reimbursements, grants and private donations.
For 100 years, the community has been there for Nantucket Cottage Hospital so that we can be here for Nantucket. Be a part of that ongoing tradition and donate now.

| More Appointments Via Visiting Physicians
Patients in need of medical care on Nantucket this summer will discover that our hospital has more physician office hours available to meet their needs.
Nine internal medicine physicians associated with the Massachusetts General Physician Organization (MGPO) will take rotations to provide five additional half-days of office appointments starting in July.
Each week, a visiting doctor will see patients in the office suites of either Dr. Pearl or Dr. Koehm, who are among our current MGPO doctors. The extra daily hours will help make available same-day or next-day care for patients who might otherwise visit our Emergency Room for non-emergency ailments.
Names of the visiting doctors and their schedules will be published later this month in hospital advertising and on the hospital website. Patients who need to see a doctor this summer but who don't have a local primary care physician may call our MD ACKcess line at 508-825-1000 for an appointment.
In response to the pending departure of Dr. Greg Hinson from the hospital's year-round MGPO practice, two locum tenens (temporary) physicians will see his patients through the summer. Dr. Ron D. Scott will fill in from June 4th - July 6th and Dr. Elizabeth O'Connor fills in from July 6th through mid-September, when the hospital plans to have a permanent replacement for Dr. Hinson. |
| ER Manages Major Casualty Incident
On Monday, May 23, our hospital's Emergency Department experienced a surge in patients due to a van rollover on Polpis Road that was quickly classified as a major casualty incident (MCI). The vehicle held 15 passengers who were visiting the island as a part of the University of Massachusetts Life Long Learning Program and their driver, the program's director.
Before the first patient arrived at 5:05pm, five physicians and more than a dozen nursing staff were ready to treat the patients who had injuries ranging from cuts and scrapes to contusions and fractures.
While caring for the 16 patients injured in the van rollover, an additional six patients came into the ER seeking care. Because of weather off-island, MedFlight was unable to come to the island, so ground transportation was arranged for three accident victims as well as two additional patients who needed treatment at a larger hospital. The Southeastern Massachusetts Emergency Response System, which goes on alert in case of an MCI, helped arrange the off-island ambulances which the Steamship Authority brought to the island on a special trip. Hy-Line Cruises also helped us by taking two patients on their regular 8pm ferry. Two other accident victims were admitted to NCH. Those not transported or admitted here were treated and released. Quick action by our medical and administrative staffs, and use of the hospital's incident command system, resulted in our mostly trouble-free responses and positive outcomes for patients. Officials at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health have praised Nantucket Cottage Hospital for its emergency preparedness and for our reactions to these major casualty incidents. |
