Tip of the month - Halloween
|
 | | Trick or Treat! |
It is that time of year again. Halloween is just around the corner which means the sugar fairies across the world are preparing.
Just what are the sugar fairies you may ask? Well at our house a few days after Halloween a sugar fairy arrives and takes a BIG chunk of our kids Halloween candy and delivers it to other kids who may have not gotten any. In exchange for this wonderful sharing by our children they get a little gift perhaps a book or small toy. (read more here....)

Food sensitivities
|
When an allergic reaction occurs the immune system responds. Most people are very aware of environmental allergies, like ragweed, causing symptoms such as runny noses and sneezing. Food allergies caused by an immediate immune response can cause anaphylaxis or tightening of the airways. We commonly hear about this with foods such as peanuts or other nuts. Did you know there is another category of immune reaction known as a delayed immune response. These reactions can occur over several hours to several days. These are the most common food reactions. We call these delayed immune reactions to food, food sensitivities. Food sensitivities can cause many different symptoms and health problems. (read more here)....

My top 3 cookbooks
|
For those that know me well know I have an addiction. I confess I am addicted to cookbooks. Not always to cooking... but to cookbooks. I especially love ones where the food actually ends up tasting great! So following my previous discussion about food sensitivities one of the biggest challenges for people is figuring out how to cook good tasting food. These cookbooks are my current favorites for helping people with food sensitivities.- The Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook: Whole Foods Recipes for Personal and Planetary Health, Second Edition
This cookbook contains many recipes all of which are gluten-free, dairy-free and egg-free. The coconut Quinoa Pilaf is delicious! - Enlightened Eating This is by local author and nutrition expert Caroline Dupont. After attending one of her cooking classes I found out how delicious kale actually is (when it is prepared properly!). This book is full of easy plant based recipes. One of my favorite potluck recipes is her Greek pasta salad (made with rice pasta).
- The Resourceful Mother's Secrets to Healthy Kids written by Meredith Deasley a pediatric nutritionist (and fellow member of the conscious family team!). This book is a very complete review of food sensitivities including how to recognize them and manage them. It is full of practical tips and ideas to help families.
