Are you ready for flu season?

September 2010
Greetings!
I turned around and here it is almost the end of September. Where did the summer go?  The kids are back at school and the mornings are cool.  In this issue I will discuss preparing for cold and flu season, top 10 iphone apps for sleep and what about a purse...  Feel free to share!

To your health.

3 things to avoid the flu
Cold seasonHere are my top 3 things to avoid the flu. There are more but these are very important.
  1. Wash your hands.  I know it's simple enough. Wash your hands before you eat or prepare food. Things do transfer from your hands to your mouth.  Simply wet your hands with water, then soap and lather for 20 seconds (sing the ABCs in your head) rinse and dry.
  2. Get your vitamin D level checked.  Vitamin D deficiency can increase your susceptibility to the flu. Here's more about this... (more)
  3. Get a good night's sleep.  Sleep is very important for the body to be able to heal and fight off "the bad guys".  If you feel tired go to bed early.  It is okay to do that sometimes.  A recent study shows that people who get less than 7 hours of sleep per night are three times as likely to catch a cold or the flu. See the next article for more information about sleep.
ZZZZ..... Ah Sleep
Comfy bedSleep wonderful sleep....

For those of you who know me well I am an Apple fan.  I love the mac and I love my ipod touch. (Maybe Santa will bring me the iphone for Christmas if I am good....)
Who would have thought an iphone app could help you sleep?
Here's a top ten list of the best iphone apps for a better night's sleep.
Now you can say your iphone also improves your health.
Enjoy!

Top 10 iphone apps for a better night's sleep.

Okay, I know how ironic this is, but here is another BIG thing that can help with sleep.  Turn off the TV or the computer.  Watching TV to unwind or surfing the net can really interfere with your sleep.  The bright light interferes with our circadian rhythm and can decrease melatonin.
What about a purse?
HandbagWith the kids back to school there have been a number of articles about backpacks. How much they should weigh, how to carry them and how to pack them.
What about a purse?  Many women carry purses and some could be even heavier then a backpack! Most purses are carried only on one shoulder which means they do put extra stress on your neck and back.  Here are a few tips to lighten your load...
  • Consider the weight of your next phone (just how much does the iphone weigh anyways....?)
  • Look at your wallet. Are there any expired cards or receipts you can clear out. I like to empty out the loonies and toonies into a savings jar at home. It lightens up my wallet and adds to my vacation fund.
  • Review the contents often.  Little used cosmetics, crayons and flyers can be emptied out as needed.  Although, if you leave it for 6 months sometimes it can be like a treasure hunt - with nifty things found in all the pockets.  (I had a similar experience when they searched the diaper bag at the airport.... Wow, I had forgotten about that granola bar... and that's what happened to my sunglasses...)
Men, you are not excluded from this.  Many men I know get overstuffed wallets that they put in their back pocket. Have you ever given any thought to the fact you sit on them and they affect your posture. Just food for thought.

Here is a segment from ctv with more information.
Coming in our October issue - food sensitivities. How to test for them and what to do to help them.
Also if there is anything you would like to learn about email me.
I want to know what interests you.

Sincerely,
