"A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT"

Special Greetings to Our Readers:
With winter behind us and spring before us, many of our readers will be looking for change- something new, something fresh, and maybe even something more challenging in your business or personal life. It is our goal to continue to serve you with information you can use regardless of the season. Our continuous interests in health care, education and staffing are subject matters that we believe you will find particularly relevant in today's challenging times.
We see the value of education in our new experiences with social media, which has found its way to the hospital. According to an article by Vince Galloro in Modern Healthcare magazine's March 14th edition, hospitals are finding ways to use social media to engage patients, raise money, and connect their communities. Social media requires both training and careful stewardship. The more educated health care providers and personnel are about social media (both the good and bad), the more likely the organization can achieve some of its marketing goals.
In this edition of Health Wire, communications coach Yvonne Brown enlightens us on the world of bullying in the workplace and beyond. She addresses ways we can establish sound boundaries and promote respect for employees and coworkers so that they feel empowered to perform at their best.
For our coverage of health disparities, we have reprinted testimony from Marcia K. Brand, PhD, Deputy Administrator for the Health Resources and Services Administration (United States Department of Health and Human Services) as she appeared recently before the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce, Subcommittee on Health. As we read on, we hear from HIM professional Margaret Gallo Kyriakos, PhD, RHIA, reminding us of the value of mentors. As leaders, mentors share wisdom, offer support, and give back to their profession. By becoming a mentor, we can pay the debt we owe to those who have reached out to help us.
From PDN's centralized remote coding lab, coder Diane Jinga, MT (ASCP), RHIT offers insights into the world of E/M coding related to physician consultants. Our own staff writer and consultant Valerie Davis shines her spotlight on the achievements of HIM professionals Artiemese Carroll and Mary R. Beamon-Taylor. Both work at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where (in October of 2010) they set a record for reducing the rate of delinquent medical records below 15%. Finally, we extend hearty congratulations to all 2010 AHIMA Triumph Award recipients. You have my best wishes for new beginnings as we usher in spring.

Practice Preparation for these Bully Predators
By Yvonne F. Brown
If you haven't met one yet, I guarantee you will soon, they are the bullies in the workplace. More often than not, they strike without warning and approach you when you least expect it. Don't be afraid, that's what predators do. But just as you protect yourself from scorpions, poisonous snakes, and other dangers in life, there are remedies available to you.
Bullies at work are becoming more aggressive lately due to apathy in some members of the corporate leadership.

The Importance of Mentoring in HIM
| |
By Margaret Gallo Kyriakos, PhD, RHIA
Remember the person who had the most influence on your health information management (HIM) career? This was the person who gave you the confidence to finish school, look for your first job, or succeed in your current job? The person who challenged you to overcome obstacles? Inevitably that person was, and perhaps still is, your mentor. Now, granted that person could have been a family member or friend, but most likely that person was a boss, co-worker, instructor, or maybe even an HIM professional who took a special interest in you. That person was acting in the role of "mentor." Hasn't your HIM career been enhanced by just knowing there was a person in your corner cheering for your professional success?

Statement by Marcia K. Brand, Ph.D., Deputy Administrator Health Resources and Services Administration U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS)
The following information on Health Disparities is a reprint and excerpt from the US Department of Health | |
Health Disparities -"Eliminating health disparities is one of HRSA's top priorities. When it comes to efforts to eliminate disparities in access to care and health outcomes, our largest programs do the heavy lifting: health centers, Ryan White, health professions training, and maternal and child health. The largest portion of the individuals whose health care we support-more than 19 million people-are served through our network of 1,100 health center grantees operating more than 7,900 service delivery sites in every State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Pacific Basin.

The Coding Circuit: Trials and Tribulations with Physician Consultants and their corresponding E/M Codes
| |
By Diane Jinga MT (ASCP), RHIT
Remember our E/M course in CPT class? This is the most complex area of CPT codes. My recent work experiences with E/M have made this area of coding much clearer. It is not my intent to go into detail about how E/M is calculated; I can refer you to an excellent website for this. Instead, I want to clear up any misconceptions about using proper E/M codes, especially when dealing with physician consultants.

Recognizing Artiemese Carroll, AA and Mary R. Beamon-Taylor, RHIT
By Valerie R. Davis, RHIA
In this issue we have the pleasure of recognizing two HIM staffers, Artiemese Carroll and Mary R. Beamon-Taylor, who both helped Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center to set a record in lowering the number of delinquent medical records and undictated operative reports. Here, they share the story of how they achieved this success.
