DIDuknowDid You Know...

November is the month to be spent with friends and family, which is the perfect time for sharing and saving family stories. Family stories month is also perfect for bringing co-workers together. Everyone enjoys hearing a funny or embarrassing story about a co-worker and learning about someone's family is also a great bonding experience. It's a great team building activity that will help co-workers see each other as people first and realize that they have a lot more in common with each other than they would have thought previously.

Gerri
Dear Readers,

As Thanksgiving fast approaches, we may be inclined to count our blessings and make special note of those things for which we are particularly grateful.  Personally, I am grateful that I have had the opportunity to know many of you (our readers) and also to work with you either in my professional life as a President/CEO of a small business or in my various community and association-related endeavors.  This publication has recently seen its one-year anniversary, an event for which many of us at Professional Dynamic Network (PDN) and The Jordan Evans Institute (JEI) are quite grateful.

Our gratitude extends to all current and past U.S. military personnel.  Thursday, November 11 is Veterans Day.  We owe so much to those who have sacrificed so profoundly and answered the call to serve so unselfishly.  Without them, we just simply would not be the country we are today.

In this issue, we attempt to give back to all whom we are able to reach by sharing what insights we may have on staffing, education, health care, and health information management.  First, in our feature article, Theresa Jones [President of Chicago Area Health Information Management Association (CAHIMA)] offers some scholarly insights into the various learning styles of adults.

Next, Valerie Davis and Carolyn Evans report on their experiences

at a recent health care disparities conference held at Governors State University.

Furthermore, Coding veteran Mari Petrik provides yet another assist in helping us all to prepare for the transition to ICD-10.  Mari shares her knowledge of coding in specific examples and highlights the importance of further training as we all look ahead.

Finally, we focus our spotlight on Theresa Wisdom, an HIM professional who recently started a new and exciting job at the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA).  We are confident that Theresa will continue to contribute mightily to our profession in her new position.

Our PDN and JEI family wishes you (our readers) all the best as we bring 2010 to a close.

Happy Holidays!

learnHow Many Ways Do Adults Learn?

By Theresa L. Jones, MSEd, RHIA

Reprinted from The PATH, CAHIMA Newsletter

According to Merriam, Caffarella & Baumgartner, "learning, so central to human behavior yet so elusive to understanding has fascinated thinkers as far back as Plato & Aristotle". (Merriam, Caffarella & Baumgartner, 2007 p275).

BooksAccording to the authors and as cited by Illeris & Ormrod, "learning is a process that brings together cognitive, emotional and environmental influences and experience for acquiring, enhancing or making changes in one's knowledge, skills, values and world views".  Learning theories are tools to aid us in understanding what is really going on in our effort to construct solutions to problems. There are many learning theories to explore. According to Merriam, despite one's preference for most, all theories function for two primary reasons: 1) "to provide us with vocabulary and conceptual framework for interpreting the examples of learning that we observe" and, 2) to suggest "where to look for solutions to practical problems" (Merriam, et al 2007, p277-278).  Read More

CodingThe Coding Circuit:

ICD-10-CM & ICD-10-PCS: Challenges and Opportunities Await

By Mari Petrik, MBA, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P

Reprinted with updates from The PATH, CAHIMA Newsletter

The compliance date for reporting ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes has been set for October 1, 2013.  AHIMA has suggested 50 hours of training for current coding professionals as follows:

·        16 hours of training in ICD-10-CM

·        24 hours of training in ICD-10-PCS

·        10 hours of practice with the two coding systems

With the 2010 update there are 69,101 diagnoses codes and 71,957 procedure codes within the ICD-10-CM and PCS systems; so the recommended training time is not surprising.   Some facilities will choose to spread their coder training out over a number of months, while others plan a more just-in-time training approach. To prepare yourself for that training, it is highly recommended that you begin early by familiarizing yourself with both systems.  Read More
