Secretary Kathleen Sebelius' Statement on New Health Care Quality, Disparity Reports
(Reprinted from HHS Press Office News Release, Tuesday, April 13, 2010)
"Today's reports demonstrate why passing health reform was so critical," said Sebelius. "In 2009, healthcare associated infections increased and minorities were less likely to have insurance and less likely to get the treatments they needed. In a reformed system, more Americans will get the care they need, regardless of their race or ethnicity and the quality of care will improve. The numbers we saw today are troubling, but ultimately, reform will help turn these numbers around."

Dear Readers, Now is the time to usher in the autumn season. With the fall season comes new adventures and bright colors. As the leaves change around us, we are reminded to take stock of what change we have already experienced and what further change we anticipate in the near future. A great proverb counsels us that "The more things change, the more they stay the same." This seems often true. We have had massive change in our economy, in health care, and in government. Yet there are still certain things that endure-family, the importance of customer service, the holidays, etc. Despite all the changes around us, this publication continues to endure. We are celebrating our one-year anniversary in just a few short weeks. We are both grateful and excited to have the opportunity to communicate with you, our readers. In this issue, Russell Nicholson shares her expertise in HR and highlights the many benefits that can be derived from implementing a carefully crafted employee empowerment program. Additionally, U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Katherine Sibelius comments on health disparities in an excerpt taken from her public statement on health care reform. Coding expert Mari Petrik offers vital resources in preparation for the transition to ICD-10. Furthermore, Brenda Johnson guides us on a journey through proper etiquette in pursuing and managing a relationship with a mentor/advisor. Finally, we focus our spotlight on Clyde Lewis, an HIM professional who recently received his Doctorate in Humanities Studies from Ramah Institute of Theology. We extend further kudos to current ILHIMA member Darice Grzybowski and former ILHIMA member Shirley Eichenwald-Maki, both of whom were named to Advance magazine's "Top 10 in HIM" list. Happy autumn! Creating an Empowering Work Culture
by Russell L. Nicholson, MBA
To remain competitive, companies are moving away from the fear-based command and control style and toward a work environment that advocates employee empowerment at all levels. To achieve this, both managers and employees must confront and challenge some deeply ingrained beliefs and obstacles and adopt a set of values, beliefs and practices conducive to developing a workplace where employees feel empowered.
Employees must accept responsibility and accountability for self-management while increasing their level of trust in management. Managers must be willing to let go of their old role as bosses and take on the new roles of coach, mentor and facilitator. These changes will result in a new organizational culture that empowers all to achieve market share goals and extreme customer satisfaction.

The Coding Circuit: 8, 9, 10 .............Go!
By Mari Petrik, MBA, RHIA, CCS, CCS-P
Early in 2009 we received some long awaited information from the Department of Health and Human Services. The Final Rule for replacement of the ICD-9-CM code set with ICD-10-CM (diagnoses codes) and ICD-10-PCS (procedure codes) was published on January 16, 2009. The implementation date for the two classification systems has been established as October 1, 2013. Because this rule has been anticipated for so long, it is difficult to come up with a plan, now that ICD-10-CM/PCS seems to be a reality.

Etiquette and the Art of Mentoring
By Brenda L. Johnson
Mentoring relationships provide nurturing, advice and introductions to propel a career. Whether there is a formal mentoring program at work or a partnership developed casually, observing rules of etiquette will insure success for the mentor and mentee. Establishing expectations and goals for the relationship in the beginning helps the mentor decide if he/she has time to invest in the relationship. Perhaps the mentee has specific goals to accomplish before moving into the next career role. The mentor may know of opportunities to develop skills and meet influential people. The mentor may help create volunteer roles within professional organizations to showcase the talents of a mentee. These opportunities also create higher visibility inside and outside the organization. The mentee and mentor may meet monthly or talk on the telephone periodically to build the relationship and track their progress. People in the most successful mentor relationships schedule time to meet rather than depending on unexpected telephone calls or visits.

Congratulations to Clyde Lewis, PhD, MS, RHIA
By Valerie R. Davis, RHIA
Congratulations are in order for Clyde Lewis, who recently received his Doctorate in Humanities Studies from Ramah Institute of Theology. He also has a Masters in Health Service Administration from the University of St. Francis in Joliet and received his Bachelors degree in Health Information Management from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He is currently pursuing dual masters in biblical counseling and worship studies. Dr. Lewis' passion for higher learning and his engagement in the holistic community motivated him to continue his education.
Dr. Lewis' plans for the future include exploring more community development/enrichment programs in an effort to promote lifelong learning. His advice to other professionals contemplating advanced degrees is to pursue one's passion and always explore opportunities for self-development and growth. Never stop learning. His motto is, "A now leader is an informed leader." |
