Winooski River Fishway has a Record Salmon Spawning Run

A strong spawning run has brought large numbers of landlocked Atlantic salmon from Lake Champlain into the Winooski River this fall. During the eight week season that ended on November 10, 189 salmon were collected in the fish lift at the Winooski One hydro-electric facility.  Read more...

Salmon In Lake Champlain Getting Healthier

Landlocked Atlantic salmon have a long history in Lake Champlain.
"You go back to the 1700s salmon were very abundant in the Lake," said state fisheries biologist Bernie Pientka. That changed.
"Through all the logging, through development, through all of that the rivers were impacted; the salmon were impacted," said Pientka. "By the 1800s they were pretty much gone from the Lake."  Read more...

Using the invasive Asian carp for food and fertilizer
Workers along the Illinois River are hunting for invasive fish to turn into organic fertilizer, fillets and other commercial products.
The hope is to reduce the population of Asian carp threatening the Great Lakes. Originally imported to cleanse ponds in the South, Asian carp made it into Mississippi River waterways and have traveled north.  Read more...
