Vermont: No threatened species status for mudpuppy salamander
| Vermont Natural Resources Secretary Deb Markowitz has decided not to place the mudpuppy on the state's threatened species list, she said today.
The Vermont Endangered Species Committee had recommended over the summer adding the mudpuppy, a river-dwelling salamander that shares habitat with young sea lamprey, to the list. Read more...

Blue-green algae found in Lake Iroquois
| September brought a bloom of blue-green algae (aka cyanobacteria) back to Lake Iroquois for the second consecutive year. These blooms are caused by excessive nutrients entering the lake from stream erosion, shoreline erosion, poor management procedures during construction of buildings and roads, road erosion, wastewater disposal systems (septic systems) and stormwater runoff. Department of Energy: E15 causes 'severe damage' to marine engines | The results from two studies conducted by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory on the effects of E15 on marine engines were released on Friday, showing that the gasoline and ethanol blend can cause issues including drivability, materials compatibility, increased emissions, and long-term durability in outboard, stern drive and inboard engines, according to the release. Pesticide Usage Kills Two Children, Lawncare Company and Worker Plead Guilty to Unlawful Usage of Pesticides
| Bugman Pest and Lawn, Inc., and Coleman Nocks, age 63, of Bountiful pleaded guilty in federal court in Salt Lake City Tuesday afternoon to a misdemeanor count of unlawful use of a registered pesticide. | The report, created by Southwick Associates, puts an economic value on outdoor recreation, nature conservation, and historic preservation while also accounting for the jobs created by these activities. The report finds that from these activities 9.4 million jobs, $107 billion in federal, state, and local tax revenues, and $1.06 trillion in total economic activity is generated, at minimum.
