Rutland Men Give Their Lives for Clean Water

Clean water is essential for everyone and everything to live.  So much that people devote their lives to making sure that we do have clean water.  Without clean water, we would not be able to drink tap water safely, do the dishes and laundry, bathe, go fishing and boating, and cook meals.  During the peak of Tropical Storm Irene,  the Rutland, VT Treatment Plant Supervisor, Michael Garofano, and his son, Mike Garofano, checked on Rutland's water treatment facilityRead more...

Before It's Too Late, We Can Rebuild Wisely and Repair Vermont's Waterways

Unnecessary stream work LCI's perspective on river work post Irene...
Irene's floods brought tragic losses to many property owners and disruption of all sorts. Flood waters ripped out roads, bridges and other elements of the state's infrastructure that will be costly to repair. It even drove the Agency of Natural Resources regulators responsible for the protection of the state's waters from their headquarters in Waterbury. The personal and public costs associated with the floods will indeed be great.  Read more...

LCI Chief Scientist Update
Lake Champlain International, Inc. logo LCI is pleased to update that our Lake Champlain conservation and restoration suggestions are going very much noticed by governing officials and groups.  This headway is great news for the basin.  One example is now the Lake Champlain Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) recommends funding the USGS Stream Gauge Program and recognizes it as a high priority after LCI's Chief Scientist, Wayne Laroche, suggested it.  Wayne also advocated for buoyed data collectors in Lake Champlain to gather temperature and other data in real time; it looks that it is likely to happen now.  That's just a couple of things that LCI's scientist has done recently.  Keep an eye out for more updates soon as LCI continues its Lake Champlain conservation and restoration efforts!

What's So Bad About Dams, Anyway?
before and after dam removal  In our line of work removing old dams to restore rivers, one of the most common questions people ask is "what's so bad about dams, anyway?" Boaters Oppose Ethanol Increase
corn ethanol The Environmental Protection Agency has gone ahead with allowing fuel companies to increase the amount of ethanol found in their gasoline from ten to fifteen percent.

Problems that can range from dissolving older fuel lines to eating away the insides of gas tanks... Read more...
