Fish tale speaks volumes about restoration program
salmon
At first, the fish fought like just another decent lake trout, making a short, powerful run before stubbornly boring for the bottom. But then a funny thing happened: The "laker" gained strength, angled up toward the surface, and a bright silver salmon in the 4-pound class cartwheeled across the waters of Lake Champlain. Lake Champlain Causeways: More Harm than Good for the Lake and Economy

causewayConstruction of railroads and highways across Lake Champlain and between its' islands was largely accomplished by filling the lake with rock and earth to form causeways.  Part of the great "Industrial Revolution" of the 19th and 20th Centuries, rail lines and highways were a critical part of our nation's development.  Environmental laws were non-existent when Lake Champlain's causeways were built. Conventional Dairy Farming in Vermont Needs Immediate Action: Letter to Governor Shumlin by James H. Maroney, Jr.

drinking cowIn a letter to Governor Shumlin, James Maroney, Jr. emphasizes the urgency that needs to be taken with conventional dairy farming in Vermont. Drastically declining in numbers while many of the still operating farms likely face a similar future and contribute to about half of the phosphorus pollution in Lake Champlain, the conventional farming structure is not financially nor environmentally sustainable. Read Mr. Maroney's letter here...

Want to save some money? Try planting some trees!

treeTrees provide a lot of services...between water pollution prevention, protection from wind, heat, and cold, improved aesthetics, increased property value, and better air quality, maintaining or planting a few extra trees is almost always a great idea. Believe it or not, trees in your yard can help fish and water quality in Lake Champlain.
You can calculate how much money trees can save you along with other benefits by going to the Arbor Day Foundation Tree benefit Calculator!

LCI Employees Volunteer at Vermont's Free Fishing Day

Despite rainy weather all day, hundreds of families went to Vermont Fish & Wildlife's free fishing day event at the Ed Weeds Grand Isle Fish Hatchery on June 11. Completely free, the event hosts workshops for kids that teach them important fishing skills and water quality knowledge. After the mini-workshops, the kids get to go fishing in the stocked pond for trophy trout. Eric LaMontagne and Ross Saxton spent all day teaching kids how to tie the improved fisherman's knot...it's safe to say that Eric and Ross can now tie a pretty good knot.

River Mystery Solved
didymoThe pristine state of unpolluted waterways may be their downfall, according to research results published in a paper this week in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. A species of freshwater algae that lives in streams and rivers, called Didymo for Didymosphenia geminata, is able to colonize and dominate the bottoms of some of the world's cleanest waterways--precisely because they are so clear. Didymo does so with a little help from its friends--in this case, bacteria--which allow it to make use of nutrients like phosphorus. Read more...
Pollution lower, risks remain for marine life
salmon drawingIt can happen almost immediately.
Copper dust from car brakes gets flushed into a stream by storms. Inside half an hour, the ability of nearby baby salmon to interpret smells can get thrown out of whack. When a predator approaches, the fish don't flee, increasing the odds they'll be gobbled up. Read more...

"Eco-Totalitarianism"
Many cities and towns, as they've had to comply with federal clean water laws and get NPDES or similar stormwater permits, have objected-to the cost, or to requirements they considered excessive. The engineer for Franconia, Pennsylvania, a town of just over 13,000 people, went a bit farther during a meeting of the township's board of supervisors last week, calling proposed new stormwater measures "eco-totalitarianism" and warning that individual property owners will feel their effects.
