Phosphorus spikes in runoff to Lake Champlain
| Swamped farm fields and gorged rivers could worsen pollution worries for flooded Lake Champlain because of the high amount of phosphorus that has washed into it, officials said Tuesday. Snowmelt and heavy rains caused the Winooski River to dump into the lake in the last week of April about 77 metric tons of phosphorus, about half of what the river puts in the lake in a typical year... Aerial Photographs Capture Sediment Loading to Lake Champlain
| Recent heavy rains and snowmelt have brought Lake Champlain water levels to record highs. To help track the occurrence of sauger in Lake Champlain anglers are encouraged to report their catches to Emily Zollweg at DEC Region 5 office.

RBFF Asks Americans to Create Memories on the Water during National Fishing & Boating Week |
The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation (RBFF) knows that unforgettable memories are rarely made in front of the TV or while playing the latest video game simulating "real-life." That's one reason why during National Fishing and Boating Week (June 4 - 12, 2011) RBFF's Take Me Fishing™ campaign is asking kids, families and outdoor adventurers to celebrate summer the "old-fashioned way" - by getting outside and making some real memories on the water. To sweeten the pot, RBFF is offering up a trip for four in its 'Memories on the Water' video contest, which launches June 2 on Facebook! Read more...

Great Lakes Lamprey Control Program Will See Cuts Next Year |
The Great Lakes Fishery Commission's sea lamprey control program will see a significant reduction in support next year. Funding to the commission for its anti-lamprey efforts will be $18.7 million in 2012, a 14% reduction compared to 2010. Researchers and members of the Great Lakes Fishery Commission fear this reduction will undo years of progress, as 90% of the fishery commission's budget is put toward the control of sea lamprey.
