Cormorant Control Update: Plans Being Made to Control Cormorants on Lake Champlain
| The Lake Champlain Cormorants Communication Committee met at Grand Isle on January 24th to discuss details of a new management plan for control and management of Lake Champlain's cormorant population. Management of double crested cormorants is a policy being incorporated into a new comprehensive Colonial Waterbird Management Plan being drafted for Lake Champlain. Study examines fishing tournaments' toll on Lake Champlain
Scientists this summer will study the toll that fishing tournaments are taking on Lake Champlain. The Lake Champlain Research Institute at Plattsburgh State University has received nearly $130,000 in EPA and Great Lakes Fishery Commission grants to conduct the study. Read more...

New York Farmers to Receive $200,000 to Join the Fight in Reducing Lake Champlain Pollution
Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman today announced the dedication of $200,000 in recovered funds to assist Champlain Valley farmers in combating water pollution in Lake Champlain. The money, recovered from a 2007 case in which a major power company violated the Clean Air Act, will target phosphorous reduction from area farms, improving their operations, fighting pollution, and improving the health of Lake Champlain. Connecticut Anglers Face $500 Fine for Using Lead Jigs and Sinkers

A bill has been introduced in the Connecticut General Assembly to prohibit the sale and use of the most commonly used lead sinkers and jigs in state waters. This comes on the heels of a decision by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that a federal ban on lead fishing tackle is unwarranted. Read more...

Bills to be Introduced to the Vermont House: Felt-soled Boots & Waders, Lead Sinkers, Transporting Bait Fish

Four bills related to fishing are to be introduced to the Vermont House. Two of the four Bills involve felt-soled boots and waders; one related to consumer education about the ban of felt-soled boots and waders and the other is related to public education about felt-soled boots and waders. Another Bill to be introduced is an act to allow the use of lead sinkers for fishing in streams and rivers. The fourth Bill proposes to allow transporting harvested bait fish within the same body of water between access areas. Read more...
