Q: My husband and I own a 9,000 SF lot in the Laytonsville area and want to demolish our old home build a new one it, BUT after doing some research we are coming across Zoning and County ordinances which are confusing the heck out of us and slowly crushing our dreams! How do we approach this nightmare? Please help us!
- Losing My Grip from Laytonsville

A: Dear Losing My Grip,
You are not alone, and I have some advice and pointers to help you out. The first thing you need to do is gather your information: print out your tax assessment information,  obtain your plat (it can be obtainined online), and lastly go to the county zoning website and print out the Zoning publications. Next ,  request a preliminary analysis from your sales person at Classic Homes (It's free!). This will let you know the basic outline of your lot and zoning and point you in the right direction. Lastly ask your sales person for a referral to a good Land Engineer, set up a meeting at your lot and discuss  the  possibilities. In more times than not they will use their expertise to bring your dreams and needs to a reality and give you a picture perfect idea of what needs to be done. And remember, the most important thing, from the moment you start DO NOT think of what cannot be done, only think of what CAN be done.

Classic Homes Builds in Lakewood Overlook

What's going on across from Lakewood County Club on Glen Mill Road? Developer George Simmons has taken property once planned for his own personal home site and created "Lakewood Overlook,"  a small enclave of four ½ lots to accommodate a custom build.  Only on the market since August, two sites are already sold.  Simmons has partnered with Classic Homes to work with purchasers of the properties to build custom homes.

"After we went to Frederick for business and our lives evolved up there, we decided to simply develop the property as if we were going to enjoy it," says Simmons.  "Lakewood County Club was there and the view was just great!"

Indeed, each home site sits high overlooking the country club and beyond.  There will be a cul-de-sac-type entrance leading to each of the four sites, which will tap into public utilities.

The two remaining home sites are priced in the $500-600K range and will be ready to build in the coming weeks.  Custom homes will deliver early next summer.

Construction backlog is up

By Katherine Conrad

Thursday, September 24, 2009

The backlog of construction projects across the country increased almost 9 percent from 5.6 months in June to slightly more than 6 months in July, according to the Associated Builders and Contractors.

Jamie's Picks of the Month
  • Restaurants: Redrocks - Set in a converted rowhouse, RedRocks strikes the casual observer as a swell place to unwind. The servers make you feel right at home right away -- at the door with a big smile and at the table with a good deal. The route to a good pie includes a proper oven, and RedRocks, whose name refers to the type of bricks used to make such, has one. To be a good pizza maker, says MacQuaid, "takes lots of practice and attention to detail."
  • Around Town: The Spooky Movie Film Festival - Now in its fourth season, the five-day festival screens short and feature-length films from around the world. Since most are too scary for children, the festival includes a free family showcase, with flicks appropriate for older kids, such as "Frankenstein vs. Wolfman."
