Q: My husband and I are making selections for our new home and we are narrowing down choices and are having a REALLY tough time with this because we want everything, but our budget says otherwise...any suggestions?
-Frustrated on Falls Road

A: Dear Frustrated,
You are not alone, everyone is faced with this dilemma, it is normal. Everyone defines what they "must have" differently, and usually "everything" falls into "must have". But let's face it, you have to forfeit something to get another thing. I can't tell you specifically which wood species, or granite color you should pick, but I can tell you this - focus on the selections and upgrades that you will not be able to do at a later time. Flooring, cabinets, and countertops, for example, are upgrades you may want to focus on right away, because your dollar will carry you a long way and with some money spent you can make your home look very nice, while leaving the selections that are expendable for a later date. I must warn you the selections like those do carry somewhat of a price tag, however, try and think of the whole picture and not just the price. Getting nice cabinets, floors, and countertops will have somewhat of a price, but placing your buck into selections that steal the show may go way farther than you think. Weigh all your options, stand firm against sticker shock, try and forfeit items that can be done later for items you must have, and the road to your dream home will come significantly easier.

Classic Homes Offers Exciting Options for Landowners

From Baltimore Sun
Builder Profile, August 16, 2009

An experienced Maryland builder now is offering custom and semi-custom homes at affordable prices to those who own land in the Baltimore region.

Classic Homes of Maryland, a division of Classic Homes, has been building homes in Virginia since 1983 and in Montgomery County for the last three years.

"Now we're coming to Baltimore to open an office because of the volume of calls we've been getting," says vice president of Classic Homes of Maryland (www.classicmd.net).

The family-run company, she explains, was started by her father, who has built more than 1,200 homes in northern Virginia.

  • Restaurants: The Burger Joint - The name seems self-explanatory, but the Burger Joint takes a broad approach to the term. In addition to the various beef versions there are turkey, lamb, tuna and veggie versions, a classic Cuban sandwich, a lobster roll and grilled cheese sandwiches in four varieties. The Burger Joint makes sweet potato fries and Yukon gold fries; onion rings are also available. The bargain lunch combo on weekdays is a burger, fries and soda for $8.99.
  • Around Town: Shakespeare Free for All
This year D.C. is continuing its tradition of free performances with "Taming of the Shrew". The price is not the only thing that's right in Shakespeare Theatre Company's splendidly sassy revival of "The Taming of the Shrew." Guided smartly back to the stage by a new director, David Muse, the production retains the sizzle of its 2007 incarnation.
