THE BOTTOM LINE

ISSUE 202

Costa Rica
I recently returned from my travels to Costa Rica. I have a friend who lives there with a pretty Tico lady named Monica. I have been visiting Costa Rica over the last six years both as a tourist type visitor and more recently looking at the Real Estate. As the U.S. goes, it also seems that Costa Rica has had a 30%-40% correction in their real estate values. I have traveled in all directions from San Jose and seen beaches, volcanoes, and white water.

This year I stayed on an eco-farm outside of San Isidro about 60 miles south of the Capitol of San Jose. Their website is (Ecojoya.com)

This farm is at a 3,500 foot elevation, and their spring like weather of 75 degree days and 65 degree nights is year round. It was a refreshing change in life style. There are over 30,000 US expatriates now calling Costa Rica home. Most have retired with pensions coming in from the US or other countries, with Canada represented there as well.

I only speak a little Spanish and when you are away from the larger cities only the children may understand English, however you can get by with a smile and a few words. There always appears to be someone to help you out.

I have lived in Florida since I was 8 years old and am proud to call Orlando home. However, over the past several years the summers seem to have been extremely hot. As we approach retirement age, one asks if there is a better place to invest and have a more gentle life. My opinion, after this last trip, was "Yes"! I like spring temperatures year around.

The cost to build a modest home is less than $50/sq ft there. Labor is also very inexpensive. Health Care is very good as well. In fact, many Americans have elective surgery done there at 1/3the cost of the US.

If you have thought of researching Real Estate in another country, you may want to check Costa Rica out. Prices are right again after a large surge in the 2003-2008 run up. There are many coastal communities if you want the beaches and high humidity. Also, living at a higher altitude of 3,000 - 4,000 feet is absolutely marvelous.

Be careful when buying real estate internationally though, there are things you need to know!

A great book I use and purchased at the local weekly farmers market is "Choose Costa Rica" by John Howells. The book answers common questions "Gringos" want to know.
