Greetings!
Do you see yourself as a guest expert on TV? Or maybe a guest host? Of course you know that visual media is a powerful tool to accelerate your recognition and propel your brand. If you are comfortable on camera, seize the opportunity...that is, as long as you are smart about it.
Lack of proper preparation is one of the most common and most preventable mistakes that people can make. Realize that the media can make you, but it can break you...even if you are a "media darling" (the breaking just might be dragged over a longer period of time, for example, Lyndsay Lohan, Brittany and Charlie Sheen).
What type of preparation? Well, along with learning to live in your comfort zone on camera it's extremely important to prepare specifically for the show you will be visiting;
What's the flavor of the show? 1. Is it funny, serious, political (if so, which way?), scandal-loving or family-oriented? 2. Who is the host that you will be interacting with and what is his/ her sense of humor and style of interviewing? 3. Most of all, know what you will be discussing, who the audience is compiled of and be prepared for the most obvious questions.
Extra credit that pays off: if there is anything in your history that can be brought up, especially if it is not congruent with your current brand, know exactly how you should handle it. Be ready with a truthful, positive approach no matter what the topic. Good can be found in every situation; caught in a cheating scandal or dirty business practice... well, then there were lessons learned and a new outlook gained, I'm sure!
Know how you will deflect unwanted attention; set a polite but firm, "no thank you" in your own words. "No comment" can sometimes encourage a tougher approach by the interviewer. Ratings might spike if tempers fly, but this will come at your own expense. So, having a prepared statement is crucial.
It's not often that I have guest writer, but my friend Libby Gill is a fabulous branding strategist and she has an interesting observation of a fallen "media darling," and her feeble attempt to regain her position.
Remember, your personal brand is just that... personal. No one can create it or destroy it without your consent!
FINALLY: If you are heading up your own video project to get your brand out there all on your own, then tune in to the new tele-series, "Keep it Rolling!" starting Oct 3rd! Great tips, ideas and answers to YOUR questions! Details here!

So even if you could get past the "Do we really need to see more of Paris Hilton?" question, the heiress pretty much proved that she is a walking brand killer with her recent appearance onThe View. Sadly enough it's not someone else's brand she is destroying - it's her own. Not that anyone really believed what she told the New York Times and the Today Show about how she was going to show viewers of her new show, The World According to Paris, her amazing work ethic and the 17 product lines she's shepherded. But way to kill the buzz, such as it was, in one fell swoop when she couldn't answer Barbara Walter's easy-to-anticipate questions about her community service work or why she hadn't followed through on her pledge to help women prisoners. Puhleeeze! Adding drama to ditziness, she apparently pitched a fit backstage after her interview on The View then cancelled a whole round of press interviews, saying they weren't time sensitive. Way to change our minds about your amazing turnaround...
Come to think of it, maybe that's why her new show premiered to a miserable 400,000 viewers. Is the once darling of reality TV done? Article written by Libby Gill ( www.libbygill.com)
