I HEART BOOKS
I heart books illustrationThinking of innovative ways to surprise your partner on Valentine's Day? Want to avoid February's endless shelves of candy, roses, "I Love You" cards and candlelit tables for two?

On Tuesday, February 14th, share the love by sharing your love of reading! Let your partner know you want others to benefit from your passion for reading, tutoring or mentoring. To give is the greatest gift, and the best gift any child can receive this Valentines Day is love - love for books, love for reading and loving support of their dreams.

This Valentine's Day, make a difference in a child's life by showing your local community that you care. Choose from 36 different organizations and more than 96 volunteer opportunities.

Then tell us about your experience volunteering in your local community. Email us at volunteeropps@uwsd.org to share your story. You might be featured in a U-T San Diego!

"Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him."

The Science of Sisterhood and Mentoring Matters
Betsy and Ninfa
Betsy and Ninfa in 2007
Environmental biologist Betsy Miller has been a Big Sister to Ninfa through Big Brothers Big Sisters since 2006. "We have a real bond that we've continued all these years, through many changes," Miller says. "I earned a degree, got married; she was a little girl when we started, and now she's a sophomore in high school."

With a grandmother that volunteered at the same hospital for 47 years, giving back runs in Miller's family. She also recognizes her important role as a mentor: "I tell Ninfa about my jobs and introduce her to my women friends who are structural engineers and physicians so she can see the careers open to women in the sciences." Ninfa's upcoming honors project for her science class involved researching a scientist; who better than her big sister?

"Because of Betsy, I have been working harder in school, I have more trust in myself, and I am more independent," Ninfa says. And her mother agrees: "Since meeting Betsy, my daughter is more responsible and reaches her goals; she now confronts issues with more maturity and has opened up to become an outgoing young lady who became president of her elementary school. Betsy is someone I trust to be a role model for my daughter."

Volunteer Opportunities
Help Students Succeed

Pro Kids Golf Academy is searching for dedicated, committed volunteers who want to make a difference in the lives of under represented youth in the City Heights community by tutoring students aged 7-17. As volunteers you not only play a vital role in helping students improve academically, but also serve as role models and mentors. In addition, volunteers facilitate educational games and activities, and provide students a positive and lasting influence in their lives - an influence that they are sorely lacking. Tutoring is needed Monday through Friday from 2:30-5:30 p.m.

ABC Any Body Can Youth Foundation After-School Program

Tutors will help students aged 7 to 17 years with general homework and computer learning activities from 4:00-6:00 p.m., Monday to Thursday. The Learning Center on Market Street provides students with a quiet, comfortable space where they can study. There are 20 new laptops available to students for homework and research. The educational program's goal is to help ABC youth succeed academically and ultimately obtain college degrees. As part of our commitment to local students, we have established a formal partnership with Golden Hill K-8 School and King-Chavez Preparatory Academy by offering free after-school tutoring.
