A Very Merry Christmas Indeed! | Christmas music and baby coos filled the air. Turkey, ham and all the fixings adorned several tables. Brightly wrapped gifts waited under the tree. WLC Members ate, crafted, snapped photos with Santa and exchanged gifts with young mothers from the San Diego Youth Services Teen Options Program. It was a Christmas Party!
"When I learned that Teen Options hadn't receive funding for a Christmas Party I thought it would be a good fit for our WLC," said Aimee Zeitz, Community Impact Manager at United Way. "Teens thrive on encouragement and support. For these young moms to be rewarded with this party for the progress they've made in improving their lives is significant."
While Teen Options is not currently a United Way-funded program, United Way shares a common vision with San Diego Youth Services; to support young parents in being the best parents they can be. Research indicates that two of the highest risk factors for child abuse and neglect are substance use and young parents. Women's Leadership Council was pleased to host this event in support of the Teen Options Program which targets both of these risk factors by focusing on empowering teen mothers to learn parenting skills, stay in school and stay drug and alcohol free.
Thanks to generous funding from US Bank, a committee of WLC Members worked diligently to create a memorable Christmas Party with only four weeks planning time. With a committee of five motivated WLC members working together, the event came together quickly.
Janet Caiazzo, Program Manager of Teen Options sent her thanks after the party: "What a wonderful event you ladies threw for us! The clients were so grateful. This was very special for them! Thank you so very much for putting this together during the holidays. We really appreciate the extra effort and going above and beyond. Thank you again!"
