STORIES FROM PARADISE:

This is another testimonial written about us on TripAdvisor, this time by one of the attendees from our May Kalama Kamp, Joel Edwards. TripAdvisor is one of the best resources travelers have online to learn about hotels and other destinations, so we really appreciate that our guests consistently write such great things about us. Thanks to all of you who have posted on our behalf!

Vista Guapa means "Beautiful View." Well, there's a lot more to the resort than its amazing view. The heart and soul of the resort are Wendy and Alvaro Solano. When you go to Costa Rica, you will soon hear the words "Pura Vida!" That basically translates to "All that is good about life!" Wendy and Alvaro are "Pura Vida!"

I attended world famous Waterman Dave Kalama's Stand Up Paddling "Kalama Kamp" in April. Our home base was the Surf Camp. From the moment you arrive, you feel at home. The cabanas are very comfortable and have absolutely amazing views. The sunsets are beyond my ability to describe! The staff is welcoming and truly enjoy making your stay special. The surfing is epic!

Alvaro is a very well known Pro Surfer in Costa Rica and is the "go to guy" when you surf here. Alvaro has spent a life time surfing the breaks here, and trust me, Alvaro knows where to take you to make your experience amazing. Regardless of your skill level, you will enhance your surf skill with Alvaro's guidance.

Dave Kalama can select any resort he wants to host his surf "Kamp." He chose Vista Guapa. So should you. It will be a life altering experience. Trust me, when you stay here, you will forever and always feel the stoke of "Pura Vida!" I'm going again next year. Aloha from Maui!

AND SOMETHING FOR THE LADIES...

For those of you who have been looking for the perfect suit for surfing - something that combines the cuteness of the bikini with the practicality of surf shorts, Vista Guapa guest-turned-surfing devotee, Anna Jerstrom, has decided to combine her passion for surfing with her skill with clothing design to create the perfect surfing bikini with a website that enables you to design the bikini that suits you perfectly.  Check out the cool gear on an even cooler site at: CALAVERA.

Calavera Logo

Calavera has designed a line of bikinis created specifically for female surfers that not only stays in place through all the physical demands of surfing but features unique, edgy fabrics and customizable combinations. Calavera's designs are grounded in the philosophy that female surfers should not be distracted by their bikinis but rather empowered by them.

Saludos! Greetings!

Greetings!

Greetings from the warmth and beauty of Costa Rica.  We've welcomed in the tropical showers of the Green Season and are enjoying our blossoming gardens and green landscapes.  We hope you and your friends will be able to come join us for some wave work-outs, mountain bike climbs, nature hikes, Stand Up Paddling, yoga and pura vida.

We're continuing to expand our partnership with YOLO boards after a successful stand-up paddle camp in April with none other than surf legend Dave Kalama.  Hopefully you've had a chance to see the videos on our website and on our Facebook page.  See below on details for future Stand Up Paddle camps, for those of you interested in trying out this awesome new sport.

But of course, Alvaro and the team are always ready to take you out on the best local breaks for traditional surfing as well. Read below to hear about how Alvaro and the team have been winning on the National Circuit - clearly the distractions of other sports haven't diminished their focus on their #1 passion - SURFING!

Enjoy the news and let us hear from you. Sign up on Facebook and keep in touch!

Pura Vida!

The Vista Guapa Team

More Stand Up Paddle Camps at Vista Guapa!

Did you miss the Kalama Kamp this spring and find yourself digging through our website to find other SUP camp opportunities? Well, not to worry! Vista Guapa SUP Team Member, Mark Salvetti, who has been SUP Paddle-Fit Certified by Kalama Kamp Co-Founder Brody Welte, is leading our next SUP camp this coming December. The Certification is accredited by the governing athletic foundation ACE and is the only certification available for Standup Paddling, covering water safety, paddle instruction, fitness on the water and the overall SUP business.

A veteran of Vista Guapa and dubbed our Chief Inspiration Officer, Mark was instrumental in bringing SUP's (by way of YOLO Boards) to Costa Rica and Vista Guapa.  Mark helped manage April's Kalama Kamp and will be guiding the first "YOLO Board Experience" camp at Vista Guapa in early December - December 3 - 8.  The SUP-specific YOLO Experience Week will focus on Standup Paddling's fitness benefits, paddling and surfing techniques and just plain having fun.  Each guest will receive a special "YOLO Experience Package", and a full complement of photos and videos following the trip.

(If you've ever seen any of Mark's photos or videos you know that  the guests will get more than their share of digital mementos and entertain us with their exploits via Facebook. And if you've ever overlapped with Mark at Vista Guapa, you know this is a trip not to miss!)

For more information you can email Mark at markosalvetti@gmail.com. But HURRY! There are only a few spaces left in this camp!!! (If the camp is oversubscribed, we are looking into running a second week December 10 - 15.)

We are also in the planning stages for an "All Female YOLO Experience" trip that is tentatively scheduled for Mardi Gras 2012 and "Kalama Kamp II" in late March (Date TBD) and another YOLO Experience tour by Mark Salvetti in May 2012....Stay tuned to the website, newsletters and Facebook for more announcements.

Another National Championship!

Having focused the last several years on managing Vista Guapa, Alvaro had stepped aside in National level competitions, but not for long. Years of training, coaching and teaching ultimately led Alvaro back out on the National Circuit, this time as part of the Masters competition. And would you expect anything less than the national title? If so, then you've clearly never met Alvaro!

Alvaro added another trophy to the case this year, taking home the title as National Masters Champion.

Alvaro Solano Masters Champion
The trophy may weigh more than his board...

In addition, our own Dennis "Titi" Solano brought home 5th place and Leo Calvo brought home 4th place in the National Grommet Competition. It helps to train with the Master, and I'm sure they both have their eyes on the prize for next year!

Alvaro's Surf Tip of the Month

Getting in shape for the surf trip

Thinking about the surf trip coming up? Want to be in shape? Here are a few tips that will help you get there.

We all know that a strong core translates into more balance overall, but you have to put in the time and pain to get the results you want. Remember that these exercises can be done anywhere - in your bedroom, in your living while watching TV, or in your hotel room if you're a business traveler:

20 Sit ups  x 4 reps

20 Push-ups x 4 reps (this improves your pop-up on the board and paddling thru the waves)

30 Squats x 4 reps (this helps you have a stronger stand on the board)

Those simple exercises 3 times/week helps you paddle out faster, catch more waves, and surf better = HAVE MORE FUN!

Also, if you have access to a pool, that can make a BIG difference. We recommend swimming 5-minute intervals with 2 minute rest x 5 reps.

PURA VIDA.

Photos of the Month
Speaking of photos, our camp photographer (and office manager) Wendy is out there most days capturing photos of our guests on the water. We try to feature new photos regularly on the Vista Guapa Facebook page and on our website. Here are a couple pics from the past month. Enjoy!
